    • A fire log system for providing an efficient corn based fuel that is burnable within conventional fireplaces. The fire log system includes a housing having a front opening, a volume of particulate corn within the interior of the housing, a plurality of corn cobs within the front opening of the housing for retaining the particulate corn, and a plurality of retaining members secured about the front opening. The housing with the corn cobs and particulate corn is preferably dipped within a wax material after formed. A wick member preferably is positioned within the front opening for assisting in the lighting of the fire log system.

    • I claim a process for producing a superior fuel from biomass by first torrefying the biomass and then densifying it to make pellets, cubes or logs with the steps of: heating biomass to a temperature of 150-300 C and preferably to 200-280 C in a heating device, and densification of the resulting torrefied biomass in a device that compresses the hot biomass to make pellets, cubes or logs. The process can be partially or totally self heating by burning the gaseous products of torrefaction in the oven surrounding the torrefication apparatus. The energy required for size reduction after torrefaction is greatly reduced and the energy required for densification is also greatly reduced.

    • An artificial firelog is provided comprising combustible cellulosic material, a combustible wax binder and an amount of sodium bicarbonate effective to reduce emissions of particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO). The sodium bicarbonate comprises about 1% to about 10% by weight of the artificial firelog. Preferably, the sodium bicarbonate comprises about 2% to about 5% by weight of the artificial firelog. Besides substantially reducing PM and CO emissions during combustion of the artificial firelog, the undesirable odor associated with combustion of the wax binder is decreased and the firelog's total burn time is extended. Moreover, the sodium bicarbonate increases the nullpoke resistancenull of the firelog making the log suitable for outdoor use and a natural appearing white ash develops during the course of combustion.

The adhesive is mixed with corn starch, tapioca starch and yellow soil powder. The igniting composition is mixed with barium, sodium nitrate, and alum.
