    • A fuel injection system includes a pressure chamber. The pressure chamber has a displaceable piston (24), which can be subjected to pressure via a low-pressure-side pressure booster chamber, for compressing the fuel in a high-pressure-side pressure booster chamber to be delivered to an injector. The stroke of the piston (24) is controllable essentially by the pressure in a differential chamber of the pressure chamber and is used to vary the fuel pressure delivered to the injector. Means (24, 25) for enlarging the cross section of the outlet cross section out of the differential chamber of the pressure chamber are provided. The fuel pressure during the injection can be varied. A pressure increase can be achieved with simple means.

    • An object of the present invention is to provide an accumulator fuel injection system comprising a pressure increasing unit 7 and a pressure increasing common rail 6, in which leaked fuel is recirculated from a high pressure side to a low pressure side, and which is capable of reducing the amount of fuel that must be delivered under pressure by a low pressure pump 3. The focus of the present invention is to return high pressure leaked fuel to between the low pressure pump 3 and a high pressure pump 5. The accumulator fuel injection system of the present invention comprises the low pressure pump 3 for delivering fuel under pressure from a fuel tank 2, the high pressure pump 5 for changing the fuel from the low pressure pump 3 into high pressure fuel, an accumulator (common rail) 6 for accumulating the high pressure fuel from the high pressure pump 5 at a predetermined pressure, an injector 8 which is connected to the accumulator 6 for injecting the high pressure fuel, and the pressure increasing unit 7 which is provided between the injector 8 and the accumulator 6 for further increasing the pressure of the high pressure fuel. Leaked fuel from the pressure increasing unit 7 may be recirculated to the downstream side of the low pressure pump 3 through a unit leakage passage 17.

    • A fuel pump for use in a fuel injection system includes a housing at least one piston defining a work chamber and drive means which put the piston into a reciprocating motion in the chamber. An inlet conduit and an outlet conduit can be made to communicate with the work chamber. A first valve device is provided between the inlet conduit and the work chamber, and a second valve device is provided between the work chamber and the outlet conduit. The valve element of one valve device has a guide portion, which is received in a guide opening embodied in the valve element of the other valve device, and the circumferential face of the guide portion and/or of the guide opening has at least one recess, by which the contact area between the guide portion and the guide opening is reduced.
