    • A crosshead die for an extrusion system provides a balanced, even flow of molten material around a circumference. The die has a cylindrical body with opposite first and second ends, an outer wall, a horizontal centerline and a vertical centerline. The die further includes a reduced diameter end portion at the second end thereof. The reduced diameter end portion includes an axial bore. The cylindrical body further has a recessed surface in the first end, and a circular groove in the recessed surface. The groove has an inner edge and an outer edge and the outer edge includes two inwardly curved blending wedges which are positioned in opposed relation on the vertical centerline. The inner edge of the groove merges into a frusto-conical inner wall which tapers axially inwardly and merges with the axial bore in the reduced diameter end portion. The inner edge of the groove has a lesser height than the recessed surface. The cylindrical body further includes a flow inlet on the outer wall which is aligned with the vertical centerline. The body further includes first and second symmetrical flow channels which extend into the body from the flow inlet. The flow channels angle outwardly from the vertical centerline toward the outer wall and then turn forwardly to open outwardly into the groove.

    • A cross-head die for applying one or more layers of coating materials to a single, longitudinally fed, filamentary member, or to a plurality of such members in spaced, side-by-side relation. Tip and die members of relatively flat, wafer-like configuration are placed in a cylindrical cavity of the body member of the apparatus with central openings in each of the tip and die members coaxially arranged and a protrusion surrounding the opening in the tip extending into the opening in the die. Flowable coating material is injected through a radial opening in the body member and flows in both directions about an annular passageway formed by cooperatively arranged grooves in the peripheries of the tip and die members. The coating material flows from the annular passageway to the die aperture through opposing, spaced, angularly arranged surfaces on the tip and die members. In an embodiment for applying two layers of coating material, two tip members and a single die member, all of wafer-like configuration are employed, and in an embodiment for coating multiple members the apertures in the tip and die are of oblong configuration.

    • A method of extruding degradable plastic material in tubular form includes providing an annular extrusion die having an annular extrusion orifice and a longitudinal extending annular passage for conveying plastic material to the extrusion orifice. The die also has at least one arcuate passage extending at least partly around the annular passage such that the annular passage completely surrounds, or where there is more than one arcuate passage in combination completely surround, the annular passage inwardly or outwardly thereof and are in communication therewith. A separate melt stream of degradable plastic material is provided for each arcuate passage and each separate melt stream of degradable plastic material is incorporated with non-degradable plastic material in a circumferentially continuous manner to produce separate encapsulated melt streams. Each encapsulated melt stream is fed to a respective arcuate passage to cause encapsulated plastic material to pass into the annular passage with subsequent extrusion in tubular form from the annular die orifice.

    • An extrusion die for extruding at least two layers of polymers at substantially different temperatures wherein a first die has portions connected to a second die and portions spaced from the second die. Insulation is provided between the first and second dies and the first die is water cooled. A layer of insulation is provided between the spaced portion of the first and second dies. A third die is mounted to the second die and co-extrudes a third material onto the laminate formed by the first and second dies. The third die is connected to the second die but has portions spaced from the second die. The spaced portion between the second and third dies are insulated. A thermosetting polymer, such as FKM, is extruded by the first die at a temperature of about 180.degree.-200.degree. F. A fluorinated, thermoplastic polymer, such as THV, is extruded from the second die at a temperature of about 480.degree. F. A thermosetting polymer, such as ECO, used to extrude multilayered fuel tubing.
