The method further includes determining a local optimum candidate value from values in the selected bit group. The method further includes calculating a likelihood value for a bit in the selected one candidate data symbol based at least in part on the determined global and local optimum candidate values.

    • A system includes a correlation module and a control module. The correlation module is configured to generate correlation values based on a correlation of modulated signals with a plurality of preamble sequences and generate correlation values. The modulated signals include sub-carriers modulated using orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM). The control module is configured to select a largest correlation value from the correlation values and detect one of the preamble sequences in the modulated signals upon determining that a magnitude of the largest correlation value is greater than or equal to a first predetermined threshold. The control module divides N of the sub-carriers into L bands in response to a channel gain of the sub-carriers not being substantially the same for all of the sub-carriers, where N and L are integers greater than 1, and where each of the L bands includes N/L of the sub-carriers.

    • Systems and methods are provided for computing soft information for digital information based on a received signal, where the received signal suffers from noise and interference. A receiver that decodes the received signal may estimate channel information, such as the channel gain, associated with the interfering source. The receiver may also obtain modulation information through a backbone network or by decoding control information transmitted by the interfering source. Using the modulation information and the channel information, the receiver may estimate the effect that interference has on the received signal, and may compute soft information (e.g., a log-likelihood ratio) for the digital information.

    • Systems and methods are provided for computing a relative path delay between multiple transmitting source to select a source that is closest to a receiving device. Preamble sequences unique to each source are received by a receiving device. The receiving devices determines based on a channel estimation or differential algorithm which transmitting source is closer to the receiving device. The channel estimation algorithm computes the path delay based on a channel estimation correlation at different preamble sequence indices. The differential algorithm computes the path delay based on a correlation between the received and transmitted preamble sequences at different preamble sequence indices. The receiving device selects the closer of the multiple sources to be the source from which to extract data.
