    • In a copier, a document pressing device has a holder member pivotally engaged with a base member at its base end. A bracket is pivotally connected to the other end of the holder member by a shaft. An inner sleeve has its bottom pivotally engaged with a lug formed on the base member and positioned closer to a glass platen than the base end of the holder member. An outer sleeve has its bottom pivotally connected to the free end of the bracket and positioned closer to the glass platen than the point about which the bracket is pivotable. When a relatively thick document is laid on the glass platen, the device allows a cover for pressing the document to be smoothly lifted up or returned to its original position. The device, therefore, enhances the manipulability of the cover plate.

    • In a fire-alarm system in which a plurality of terminal units are connected to a fire receiver via a main signal line, the fire receiver polls each terminal unit, and the terminal unit called by the polling sends a current signal back to the fire receiver. A voltage signal receiving circuit having a DC signal component blocker is provided in each terminal unit for removing a DC signal component of a polling signal so as to detect only an AC signal component of the polling signal, and a current signal transmitting circuit having a constant-current circuit is provided so that the constant-current circuit is turned on/off to deliver the return signal. Therefore, a threshold used for signal discrimination in the voltage signal receiving circuit can be easily set. The current consumed by the terminal unit becomes constant regardless of the number of the terminal units connected when it is outputting the current signal, resulting in the terminal unit not wastefully consuming an extra current.

    • A process is disclosed for producing vinyl acetate from methanol, carbon monoxide and hydrogen which comprises the following five steps:(a) methanol is hydrocarbonylated in a hydrocarbonylation zone to produce ethanol, acetaldehyde, methyl acetate and dimethylacetal, and the products are separated in a separation zone;(b) methyl acetate is carbonylated in a carbonylation zone to produce acetic anhydride;(c) the acetaldehyde and dimethylacetal produced in the step (a) and the acetic anhydride produced in the step (b) are converted to ethylidene diacetate and methyl acetate; (d) the ethylidene diacetate produced in the step (c) is thermally decomposed to vinyl acetate and acetic acid, and the products are separated in a separation zone; and(e) the methyl acetate produced and separated in the step (a), (c) or (d) is supplied to the carbonylation step (b).
