    • The present invention is the apparatus and method for producing a plastic sheet having a pattern produced in a layer therein. The plastic sheet is a single layer sheet or a multi-layer sheet. The pattern is produced by mixing two or more plastic extrudants together in a mixer. The pattern is visible in the layer containing the two or more plastic extrudants because an at least one of the plastic extrudants is at least partially transparent. The mixer used to produce the pattern includes a housing having an end configured to expel the mixture of the two or more extrudants through a plurality of outlets. The mixer further comprises a rotatable shaft and at least one projection coupled to the shaft and rotatable with the shaft, the at least one projection configured to orient the mixture of the two or more extrudants relative to the plurality of outlets in the housing. The mixer further comprising a thrust bearing configured to couple an end of the shaft to the housing.

    • A co-extrusion head for forming high-aspect ratio gridline structures in a micro extrusion apparatus includes multiple sheets (e.g., metal plates) that are machined and assembled to define three-part fluidic channels having associated outlet orifice disposed along an edge surface of the head. Reference surfaces are also etched in the sheets and are aligned in a straight line that intersects output junctions of the three-channel cavities. After assembly (e.g., using high pressure bonding techniques), each reference surface is located inside a notch defined in the edge surface. The edge surface of the co-extrusion head is then trimmed (e.g., machined by wire EDM) using the reference surfaces as a precise guide, thereby producing uniform length outlet orifices with uniform flow impedance.

    • A melt distribution block for a co-extrusion die has a generally annular body with opposed front and rear faces and opposed inner and outer faces. Inlets at the outer face have channel ports for accepting flow of melted polymer into the distribution block. Flow controlling valves independently control the melted polymer flow through each of the channel ports. Melt flow channels on the front and rear faces between the inner and outer faces are in fluid communication with the channel ports. A thermal insulation layer within the distribution block between the front and rear faces separate all or part of the melt flow channels on the front face from all or part of the melt flow channels on the rear face. The blocks, together with separator blocks, are axially stackable front to rear around a central mandrel to form an extrusion die for making blown films into tubular form.
