    • A dynamically adjustable system for updating an angular orientation of a surveillance device of a moving vehicle is disclosed. The system comprises a surveillance device, a motor coupled to the surveillance device, a compass based angular sensor configured for detecting the orientation of a vehicle, and a controller. The controller calculates the updated angular orientation of the surveillance device and sends control signals to the motor. The motor rotates the surveillance device such that the surveillance device provides a driver of the vehicle with a key desired field of view. Pitch and roll sensors may also be employed by the system. When a turning event is detected, the controller dynamically changes the angles of the surveillance devices to provide the driver with a view of important roads within the intersection.

    • An improved Viterbi detector is disclosed in which each branch metric is calculated based on noise statistics that depend on the signal hypothesis corresponding to the branch. Also disclosed is a method of reducing the complexity of the branch metric calculations by clustering branches corresponding to signals with similar signal-dependent noise statistics. A feature of this architecture is that the branch metrics (and their corresponding square difference operators) are clustered into multiple groups, where all the members of each group draw input from a single, shared noise predictive filter corresponding to the group. In recording technologies as practiced today, physical imperfections in the representation of recorded user data in the recording medium itself are becoming the dominate source of noise in the read back data. This noise is highly dependent on what was (intended to be) written in the medium. The disclosed Viterbi detector exploits this statistical dependence of the noise on the signal.

    • A system and method includes an encoder and noise predictive Viterbi detector tuned such that error events with small values of the unique distance metrics are eliminated so that the error rate is enhanced. The system includes an encoder, a modulator, a PR channel and a detector. An input signal is input to the encoder. The encoder preferably encodes the input string with an even weight code to generate a code string thereby providing high code rates that are easy to implement. The output of the encoder is coupled to the input of the PR channel. The PR channel preferably comprises a filter and a noise source coupled to form a channel, a sampler, a low pass filter and an equalizer. The output of the channel is input to the low pass filter. The output of the low pass filter is coupled by the sampler to the input of the equalizer. Finally, the output of the equalizer is coupled to the input of the detector. The detector is a noise predictive Viterbi detector (NPV) and like the encoder is made such that error events with small values of d' are eliminated. In particular, the NPV detector includes a combined code parity and partial response trellis which advantageously reduces the hardware required for the system.

    • A dynamically adjusting surveillance system provides a monitor on one or both sides of a vehicle, each monitor including one or more cameras capturing an image that includes a key region. The monitors can display this key region to a driver of the vehicle. The key region can be updated based on the activities of the driver. For example, the key region can change to provide a desirable view for the driver before, during and after a turn is made. An angular sensor, or a steering wheel position sensor and odometer, can be used to detect the position of the vehicle in the turn to dynamically update the key region displayed to the driver. The key region can be changed at a sufficient frequency so that a gradual and smooth view is provided to the driver during the turn. This view may be in a consistent direction throughout the turn.
