    • A scanner is disclosed that operates to maintain the image sensor in the scanner at a proper exposure level during the scanning of a page despite variations in the scan rate. The scanner includes an illumination system operable to produce light in response to receiving power and to project the light, as a scanning light, onto the page being scanned. In addition, the scanner includes apparatus for moving the scanning light relative to the page at a scan rate, an image sensor for measuring the light reflected from the page and an exposure control device for controlling the exposure of the image sensor. The exposure control device operates to control the exposure of the image sensor by regulating the power in relationship to the scan rate.

    • A secure electronic storage system for digital information administered by a third party and accessible over a communications network. Sensitive information in digital format is stored in a secure database located at a physically remote storage facility which appears to a client computer as a single, peripheral storage device and is transparent to the user. The secure storage facility is treated as a local logical storage device accessible from a user's desktop computer thus allowing the storage, retrieval and updating of data files electronically over a communications network such as the internet. Dedicated data storage units identified by a user identification code are maintained in a secure environment and are accessed from a user's desktop computer utilizing a standard data file access method for a single peripheral storage device. Encryption and user authorization validation services are also provided.

    • Methods and apparatus for locating a network device relative to other network devices are useful for the management of wireless computing networks. Signal strength in a wireless network is indicative of a distance between a transmitting device and a receiving device. Through use of triangulation of the received signals at multiple receiving devices, the relative location of the transmitting device can be determined. Methods of refining the estimation of the expected location of the transmitting device are further provided. Defining an absolute location for at least one of the devices will permit determining the absolute location of the remaining devices based on these relative locations. Locating network devices relative to each other facilitates identifying a closest available resource within the network.
