    • A position location communication system determines the position of a mobile master radio using a round-trip messaging scheme in which the time of arrive (TOA) of ranging signals is accurately determined to yield the range estimates required to calculate the position of the mobile radio. The master radio transmits ranging signals to plural reference radios which respond by transmitting reply ranging signals. Upon reception of the reply ranging signal, the master radio determines the range to the reference radio from the signal propagation time. Any combination of fixed or mobile radios having known positions can be used as the reference radios for another mobile radio in the system. Individual radios do not need to be synchronized to a common time reference, thereby eliminating the need for highly accurate system clocks. Errors in TOA estimates are minimized by performing internal delay calibration, Doppler compensation, leading-edge-of-the-signal curve fitting and frequency diversity techniques.

    • The idea of this invention is to use at least two modems on the network management system side. At least one of these modems is used only for connections initialized by the network management system. At least one other modem is used only for connections initialized by any or a group of network elements controlled by the network management system. The number of modems used for connections initiated by the management system may be more than one, thus enabling the network management system to initiate simultaneous connections to more than one network element. Likewise, more than one modem can be assigned for connections initiated by the network elements.

    • An apparatus and method changes an assignment of a receiver channel element (302a-302n), such as a RAKE receiver finger based on transmit power control information (212), such as a power control bit or other suitable information, that is used as part of a closed loop transmit power control system between a transmitter and receiver. In one embodiment, a transmit power control information generator (204) produces the transmit power control information (212) on a per channel basis based on received symbol energy (210) of a received spread spectrum signal (202). A receiver channel element management module (206), analyzes the transmit power control information (212) and produces receiver channel element control information (214) to suitably change assignment of receiver channel elements, such as receiver fingers, based on the transmit power control information (212). The reassignment of fingers is rapid and provides close tracking of rapidly changing radio frequency environments.

    • A system and method for transmitting and receiving data in a mobile communications network. The system includes one or more mobile station for transmitting data in a mobile digital network. The mobile stations are configured to act as buffer/repeaters by storing and forwarding data signals until they are received by a designated destination station. The mobile stations include an antenna, a transceiver coupled to the antenna, a processor coupled to the transceiver, a data storage memory coupled to the processor, and a power supply.
