摘要： A method of ejecting ions to be analyzed from a quadrupole ion trap in which a trapping field is created by one or more RF voltages applied to one or more electrodes of the trap, the method comprising the steps of cooling the ions to be analyzed within the quadrupole ion trap until the ions are thermalized, reducing the amplitude of one or more RF voltages applied to the quadrupole ion trap and applying the reduced amplitude RF voltages for one half cycle after the one or more RF voltages have reached a zero crossing point, turning off the RF voltages applied to the quadrupole ion trap, and ejecting the ions to be analyzed from the quadrupole ion trap.

The first and second RF power supplies are independent to allow the RF voltages for generating the first RF field to have a different amplitude from the RF voltages for generating the second RF field.

摘要： Ions are injected into an orbital electrostatic trap. An ejection potential is applied to an ion storage device, to cause ions stored in the ion storage device to be ejected towards the orbital electrostatic trap. Synchronous injection potentials are applied to a central electrode of the orbital electrostatic trap and a deflector electrode associated with the orbital electrostatic trap, to cause the ions ejected from the ion storage device to be captured by the electrostatic trap such that they orbit the central electrode. Application of the ejection potential and application of the synchronous injection potentials are each started at respective different times, the difference in times being selected based on desired values of mass-to-charge ratios of ions to be captured by the orbital electrostatic trap.

The ion trap 1 comprises a first DC supply 8, a second DC supply 9 and a controller 50, which is applying in a time period a first DC voltage provided by first DC supply 8 via the secondary winding 7 to the ejection electrode 2 to pull ions in the ion trap to the opening 4 of the ejection electrode 2 and a second DC voltage provided by the second DC supply 9 via the secondary windings 7′ to the at least 70% of the further electrodes 3 to push ions in the ion trap to the opening 4 of the ejection electrode 2.

摘要： A multi-reflection mass spectrometer is provided comprising two ion-optical mirrors, each mirror elongated generally along a drift direction (Y), each mirror opposing the other in an X direction, the X direction being orthogonal to Y, characterized in that the mirrors are not a constant distance from each other in the X direction along at least a portion of their lengths in the drift direction. In use, ions are reflected from one opposing mirror to the other a plurality of times while drifting along the drift direction so as to follow a generally zigzag path within the mass spectrometer. The motion of ions along the drift direction is opposed by an electric field resulting from the non-constant distance of the mirrors from each other along at least a portion of their lengths in the drift direction that causes the ions to reverse their direction.
