    • A near field light generating element has a polyhedron core and a clad covering the core so as to contact side surfaces of the core. The polyhedron core has a reflection surface that reflects a luminous flux in a direction different from a direction of introduction of the luminous flux via one end side of the near field light generating element. A luminous flux condensing unit condenses the luminous flux reflected by the reflection surface and propagates the condensed luminous flux to the another end side. A near field light generation unit generates near field light from the propagated condensed luminous flux and emits the near field light to the exterior of the near field light generating element via the another end side. The near field light generation unit has an end surface that is exposed to the exterior on the another end side and has at least one side surface that is shielded by a light-shielding film.

    • A recording/reproducing apparatus includes an optical source and a near-field light generating unit. The near-field light generating unit includes two conductors facing to each other at a predetermined distance and generating near-field light between the two conductors by irradiation of light from the optical source. These two conductors are arranged so that a direction along which the two conductors face to each other is substantially in parallel with the longitudinal direction of a recording mark region. Here, the recording mark region is prepared from a predetermined recording material and having shape anisotropy when information is recorded on a recording medium on which the recording mark is independently formed.

    • A near-field optical head has a slider with first and second inclined surfaces that confront a magnetic recording medium during recording and reproduction of information. A recording element is formed on one of the first and second inclined surfaces and includes main and auxiliary magnetic poles stacked together with an insulation film interposed therebetween. An optical flux introducing device introduces an optical flux toward the first and second inclined surfaces of the slider, the optical flux having an optical axis inclined relative to the first and second inclined surfaces. A metal film is formed on the other of the first and second inclined surfaces of the slider for propagating the introduced optical flux along an interface between the first and second inclined surfaces to generate near-field light that is irradiated on the surface of the magnetic recording medium to effect recording and reproduction of information.

    • On a pit information surface (22d) of a read-only optical disk (22), a protective layer (22f) suited for a floating-type or a sliding-type magnetic head (3) used for a magnetic field modulation type magneto-optical disk is formed. A reproducing operation with respect to the optical disk (22) is performed while allowing the magnetic head (3) to slide on the protective layer (22f). Accordingly, a magnetic head does not need to be separated from a disk in reproduction. Thus, an optical disk device can be manufactured at lower cost and reduced in size, and a high-speed seek can be realized. Commonality of a disk cartridge (32) with the magnetic field modulation type magneto-optical disk also can be achieved. An optical disk system that is user-friendly thus can be obtained.
