    • A system and method for Flex Over or On Suspension (FOS) fault detection under a write gate for magnetic disk drives may employ a flex over suspension fault comparator that compares a predetermined reference threshold to a positive delta of a disk drive write head data stream and outputs a positive or negative FOS fault indication. A max/min buffer detects polarity of a disk drive read/write head and applies a positive buffered delta to the fault comparator. A transition-free window detector triggers the fault comparator to output the fault indication when a transition-free window of zero-value data bits of a predetermined length is detected from the disk drive head, and the transition-free window detector provides a fault validation signal to validate output of the fault comparator when the transition-free window of zero-value data bits of the predetermined length is detected from the disk drive head.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of tracks, wherein each track comprises a plurality of data sectors. A test pattern is written to at least one data sector in at least one track, and the test pattern is read from the disk to generate a noisy read signal comprising added noise. An estimated data sequence is detected from the noisy read signal, and an amplitude of the added noise is increased until a failure detection metric reaches a metric threshold. A failure threshold is generated based on the amplitude of the added noise when the failure detection metric reaches the metric threshold, and a failure condition of the disk drive is predicted based on the failure threshold.

    • A hard disk drive system including a controller and a plurality of slave testing modules located in respective components of the hard disk drive system.     • A magnetic recording disk drive determines the locations of defective bits in a failed data sector, and allows for the error correction code (ECC) to correctly decode the data from the sector. After a sector has failed decoding, the digitized waveform and the read channel state from the failed sector are stored in memory. A nondata pattern is written to the failed sector and read back to determine the locations of the defective data bits in the failed sector, which are then used to update the read channel state. The data pattern from the failed sector, with the identified bit error locations, is attempted to be decoded. If the decoding is successful then the sector is marked as bad and the correctly decoded data pattern is written to a different region of the disk, for example physical sectors specifically intended for use as spare sectors.

The first component is configured to transmit information to, and receive information from, a host device via a communication interface of the printed circuit board.
