    • As provided herein, in some embodiments, power consumption and/or chip area is reduced by bias circuits configured to provide bias conditions for more than one active circuit, thereby reducing the number of bias circuits in a design. Shared bias circuits may reduce the aggregate amount of on-chip area utilized by bias circuitry and may also reduce the total power consumption of a chip. Additionally and/or alternatively, bias circuits disclosed herein are configured to provide outputs that are less susceptible to changes in the voltage supply level. In particular, in some embodiments, bias circuits are configured to provide relatively constant bias conditions despite changes in the voltage supply level. A bias circuit arrangement with an output substantially decoupled from changes in the voltage supply level may provide a more stable operating point in an active circuit. In some embodiments, bias circuits are configured to provide bias conditions that compensate for perturbations caused by changes other inputs, in order to stabilize a particular operating point.

    • An RF output power amplifier (PA) of a cellular telephone includes first and second Class AB amplifier circuits. If the cellular telephone is to operate in a high power operating mode, then the first amplifier drives the PA output terminal. The power transistor(s) in the first amplifier is/are biased at a first DC current and a first DC voltage so as to optimize efficiency and linearity at high output powers. If the cellular telephone is to operate in a low power operating mode, then the second amplifier drives the output terminal. The power transistor(s) in the second amplifier is/are biased at a second DC current and a second DC voltage so as to optimize efficiency and linearity at low output powers. By sizing the power transistors in the amplifiers appropriately, emitter current densities are maintained substantially equal so that PA power gain is the same in the two operating modes.

    • By making use of two common-source amplifying units having a shared DC bias in conjunction with two current units or an extra amplifying unit, a power amplifier is capable of providing a high output power in a high power-gain operation and achieving a low power biasing consumption in a low power-gain operation. The two current units are utilized to provide auxiliary bias currents for diverting part of two bias currents corresponding to the shared DC bias for the two amplifying units so that the output power can be boosted in the high power-gain operation. Also, the extra amplifying unit can be coupled in series with the two amplifying units for improving the output power of the power amplifier in the high power-gain operation. The shared DC bias provides same bias current to the two amplifying units for achieving the low power biasing consumption in the low power-gain operation.
