    • A method for field aware virtual connection discovery is described. In an embodiment, a set of virtual connection domains and a set of virtual connection connectors are determined from a network. Each of the virtual connection connectors defines a connection between two or more of the virtual connection domains. An initial virtual connection connector is selected and added to a virtual connection map. A packet is generated which represents the selected virtual connection connector. The packet is flooded through the virtual connection domains and virtual connection connectors. Each virtual connection domain or virtual connection connector which the packet passes through is added to the virtual connection map. After the flooding is complete, the virtual connection map is displayed.

    • Solutions are provided that allow a network device to apply flow control on the MAC layer while taking into account the priority of the frame of traffic. This may be accomplished by generating a frame indicating that traffic flow should be paused, while utilizing a new opcode value, or alternatively by utilizing a new type/length value (possibly combined with a new opcode value). A receiving device may then examine the fields of the frame to determine whether it should use priority-based pausing, and then examine other fields to determine which priority-levels to pause and for how long. This allows for improved efficiency in flow control at the MAC layer. Additionally, the tagged pause frames can be forwarded over multiple hops on Local Area Networks across a Metropolitan Area Network or Wide Area Network.

    • The present invention discloses a method for protecting a data service in Metropolitan Area Transport Networks, a work path for services transport is established between a source node and a work destination node of the services in the Metropolitan Area Transport Network, and the method includes: setting a protection destination node using the nodes except the work destination node, and establishing a protection path between the source node and the protection destination node to protect the services of the work path; detecting by the source node the failure state of the links of the work path and the protection path, and the failure state of the nodes in the links; detecting by the work destination node and the protection destination node the failure state of the links connecting themselves with data devices, respectively, and notifying the source node when there is the failure state; switching the data services of the work path to the protection path after the source node detects the failure state of the link of the work path or the failure state of the nodes in the link, or receives a failure state notice from the work destination node.

    • A communications system is provided for enabling a plurality of service providers to interconnect via an Ethernet platform, the plurality of service providers employing disparate Ethernet protocols.     • A topology aware system that facilitates activation of a new service in a dynamic network is provided. The system automatically determines changes in network topology and provides current topology information to determine an optimal service activation path for the new service. The optimal service path is determined by combination of shortest path using standardized algorithms over discovered adjacencies, logical roles assigned to devices and a service-hub for a particular UNI. The service hub is discovered automatically by employing current topology information determined by the system itself. Thus, the system can activate a new service to a dynamic network without any manual topology feed.
