摘要： An approach for providing telephony services over a data network is disclosed. A communications system includes a location server that receives a request from a calling station to establish a call with a station associated with a called party. The location server generates a message specifying a set of addresses relating to the called party and context information. A proxy server communicates with the location server and is configured to receive the message and to attempt to establish the call based on the set of addresses. The proxy server iteratively queries the location server to obtain another set of addresses if no prior address results in establishment of the call.

A network connection and communication system is provided that monitors and displays units of network usage over a selected network. The information can be displayed in terms of usage units that are easy to understand from the viewpoint of a user. For instance, a display screen can indicate the number of available or used usage units, eg, connection minutes (time), the number of books purchased and downloaded over the network, the number of connections to a communicating partner. Multiple conversions can occur between various services that are available depending on the type of service and selected network.

摘要： A method and system for metering a communication between users (10, 20) in an internet protocol (IP) telephony system (1). The method includes the steps of: using SIP telephony control messages (110-162) to control IP telephony communication between two or more users; and metering the communication on the basis of one or more SIP metering control message (130-154) from at least one of the users to control the metering. The internet protocol telephony system (1) comprises a server (30) for setting up IP telephony communication between the two or more users (10, 20). The server is arranged to use SIP telephony control messages to set up the IP telephony communication; metering means (42) to meter the communication. The metering means is arranged to receive SIP metering control messages from at least one of the users for control of the call metering. The ability to distinguish between chargeable and non-chargeable periods of the communication provides for more flexible metering suitable to support e-commerce.

摘要： A network architecture in accordance with the present invention includes a communication network that supports one or more network-based Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The communication network includes a plurality of boundary routers that are connected by access links to CPE edge routers belonging to the one or more VPNs. To prevent traffic from outside a customer's VPN (e.g., traffic from other VPNs or the Internet at large) from degrading the QoS provided to traffic from within the customer's VPN, the present invention gives precedence to intra-VPN traffic over extra-VPN traffic on each customer's access link through access link prioritization or access link capacity allocation, such that extra-VPN traffic cannot interfere with inter-VPN traffic. Granting precedence to intra-VPN traffic over extra-VPN traffic in this manner entails special configuration of network elements and protocols, including partitioning between intra-VPN and extra-VPN traffic on the physical access link using layer 2 multiplexing and the configuration of routing protocols to achieve logical traffic separation between intra-VPN traffic and extra-VPN traffic at the VPN boundary routers and CPE edge routers. By configuring the access networks, the VPN boundary routers and CPE edge routers, and the routing protocols of the edge and boundary routers in this manner, the high-level service of DoS attack prevention is achieved.

摘要： A billing system that allows a consumer to order products from computers connected to the Internet, wherein the consumer is automatically billed for the ordered product by its telephone service provider. When a product is ordered over the Internet, a plug-in component of the consumer's computer establishes an Internet connection to a billing server. A billing server component transfers an encrypted version of the product to the plug-in component. The plug-in component then disconnects from the Internet and establishes a point-to-point (PPP) connection with the billing server. During the PPP connection, the billing server component transfers an access key assigned to the order to the plug-in component so that the plug-in component may decrypt the product. The consumer is charged a unit rate or “drop-charge” for the product by the telephone service provider using a premium telephone number assigned and administered by the telephone service provider.

摘要： The invention increases billing options for a wireless service provider by allowing the provider to make billing decisions based upon what a client or mobile station application does both on and off the network. This type of billing, based on context, generates a billing record of events whether or not a particular client accesses the wireless network or not. The invention also provides transmission quality data allowing the wireless network provider to improve user experience in a wireless network. The invention captures the context, including content, quantity, and/or quality of data processed by a mobile station using a client-based application rather than a network-based application. The client-based application causes the mobile station to transmit a billing record corresponding to the captured context to a user monitoring server. The user monitoring server processes the billing record for determining billing and for generating engineering reports.

摘要： A prepaid messaging solution which uses open networking standards (e.g., TCP/IP) and which supports pre-payment of enhanced Internet messaging services. The disclosed prepaid architectures and methods accurately determine if a subscriber has sufficient account balance to deliver a complete short message, prior to delivery of the message. The short message may be prevented from being delivered (either at the source end or at the destination end) if insufficient funds are in the subscriber's account. A prepaid tariff engine is preferably extensible over a TCP/IP network, and supports remote interaction with the SMSC and web chat servers for the purpose of applying a real-time billing charge for each message. A service provider may create subscriber classes of service that define and uniquely identify subscriber rate and/or tariffing plans used to apply real-time billing charges for sending or receiving of messages. The prepaid short message tariff engine determines the appropriate message billing based upon, e.g., flat rate per message, message count (e.g., 10 messages @ $5.00), character count (e.g., $0.01/char.), Time of Day, Day of Week (i.e., peak & non-peak hours), type of message, and/or mobile location (i.e., network point code). The prepaid short messaging service preferably supports Internet web page access to subscriber's relating to their short messaging account balances and status maintained in the prepaid short messaging database of the prepaid messaging server.
