    • A grade crossing system for extending a roadway across a railroad track comprises elongate elastomeric pad units which abut each side of the rails in the track but do not extend across the entire crossing. The elastomeric pad units rest on the ties that carry the rails and have planar top surfaces that are coplanar with the tops of the rails. The remainder of the crossing is filled with non-elastomeric panels that also rest on the ties and have planar top surfaces that are coplanar with the top surface of the rails. The abutting edges of the pad units and the panels overlap such that the panels hold the pad units down against the ties and urge them against the sidewalls of the rail flanges. Thus, mechanical fasteners are not required to hold the crossing elements in place.

    • A plate for laying as a road surface in the vicinity of a railway comprising resilient rubber material delimited by three or more edges, at least one of which is provided with teeth to lock the plate with an adjacent plate against relative movement at right angles to the bearing surface of the plate, the plate being deformable to allow installation of a plate into position alongside already installed plates. The plate may have side edges adapted to fit closely to the rails, with or without a groove for rail wheel flanges. The shapes of the plates are chosen to fit the area between the permanent road, the rails and the side edges of the level crossing.

    • Reinforced concrete bridge decking comprises a plurality of substantially identical, removable, interchangeable reinforced concrete panels having protruding tongues at opposite ends supported on and retained in place by resilient, shock absorbing pads. The panels each have a metallic frame substantially filled with concrete, and an abrasive material layer is bonded on the top surface of the concrete. The abrasive material layer provides a hard, salt resistant, anti-skid surface on the concrete panels, and also serves to strengthen the panels. The resilient pads are readily removable to release the individual panels, so that a tool can be engaged with the panels in the spaces defined between the tongues at the opposite ends thereof to remove the individual panels for maintenance or repair, or to interchange the panels with one another.
