    • A two-stroke engine is provided with a scavenging passage that extends between a scavenging intake that opens into a crankcase and a scavenging port that opens into a cylinder, and an air passage that is connected to an intermediate position of a scavenging passage for introducing air into the scavenging passage. A first check valve that is disposed within a section of a scavenging passage between a scavenging intake and the intermediate position. A second check valve that is disposed within the air passage. The section of the scavenging passage between the intermediate position and the scavenging intake, the air passage, and a mixture gas passage are arranged in a substantially same direction with respect to a longitudinal axis of the cylinder.

    • A two-stroke engine has a cylinder defining a combustion chamber which is delimited by an upwardly and downwardly moving piston which drives a crankshaft via a connecting rod. The crankshaft is rotatably journalled in the crankcase (4). The two-stroke engine includes an inlet for fuel and an outlet for exhaust gases. At pregiven piston positions, the combustion chamber is connected to the crankcase via a piston window and at least one transfer channel. The transfer channels open via transfer windows into the combustion chamber and open with the transfer opening into the crankcase. The transfer opening and transfer windows open into a region at the cylinder bore which is passed over by the piston. To obtain a delayed inflow of the air/fuel mixture from the crankcase, the transfer opening is not yet fully closed for a piston moved toward the crankcase when the transfer windows begin to open.

During an intake stroke, the lean air/fuel mixture (TM) from the branch passage (10A) is introduced into the scavenging passages (14) and the air/fuel mixture (EM) is introduced from the air/fuel mixture passage (11) into the crank chamber (2a). During a scavenging stroke, the lean air/fuel mixture (TM) is supplied from the scavenging passages (14) into the combustion chamber (2a) prior to introduction of the air/fuel mixture (EM).
