    • An improved self-adjusting automatic slack adjuster for reducing slack in the brake of a vehicle is provided, in which an easily accessible external operating feature permits the automatic slack adjuster's one-way clutch assembly to be readily disengaged to allow smooth release and retraction of the brake shoes of a vehicle brake without damage to the one-way teeth of the clutch assembly. When the external feature is operated in a brake release direction, the motion of the feature is translated into a motion which axially displaces an output part of the one-way clutch away from an input part of the clutch a distance sufficient to disengage the parts' one-way teeth, thereby disengaging the one-way clutch to permit brake shoe retraction without resistance from the one-way clutch.

    • The present invention relates to a cam-operated, self-adjusting brakeshoe adjustor that is utilized in heavy duty air braking vehicles .�.that.!. .Iadd.which .Iaddend.employ single and/or multiple-web brakeshoes. The brakeshoe adjustor includes a roller assembly, a cylindrical roller sleeve, and a pawl assembly. The roller assembly comprises a fixed eccentric roller(s) and spindle arrangement for slidable engagement with a cylindrical roller sleeve(s) which in turn is actuated by the rotation of the cam shaft. At least one portion of the spindle is provided with a ratchet for constant engagement with a mateable pawl. The rotation of the roller sleeve(s) about the eccentric roller(s) is limited by the arcuate distance of a slot contained about the edge of the roller sleeve within which a pin, radially extending from the roller, is engaged. In one embodiment, the pawl assembly comprises (i) at least one bracket sleeve for slidable engagement with a corresponding web end of the brakeshoe and having an opening for slidably receiving one of the extensions of the spindle therethrough; and (ii) at least one pawl secured to the side of the bracket sleeve for engagement with the ratchet about the spindle to permit rotation of the spindle in one direction only, the effect of which will be to restrain the combined spindle and eccentric roller(s) from turning in the direction of actuation of the cam shaft.

    • A self-adjustment mechanism for a brake system includes a first sprag clutch seated in a support. An eccentric serves as an inner race for the first sprag clutch and as an outer race for a second sprag clutch. A timing assembly serves as an inner race for the second sprag clutch and includes first and second spaced-apart pins projecting from a surface. An arm is pivotally connected to the timing assembly and positioned between the pins. A brake apply cam engages a first end of the arm so that it pivots with respect to the timing assembly. As the arm pivots, a brake apply piston is engaged. A pivot center of the arm is selectively rotated by the eccentric to maintain the phase relationhip of the cam and the brakepack as the plates wear.

The locking element (30) which is mounted movably in terms of rotation about a pin (32) and pin being mounted movably in terms of longitudinal translational motion in a slot provided in the part (10), is in form of a toothed cam the rotational movement of which results in an increase of the distance between the pin (32) and the meshing zone of the toothings, and a spring imparts a rotational movement to the locking element as soon as the toothing no longer mesh with one another.

This strut portion (44) has an operable connection with an intermediate member (24) which is supported on one of two structural members (128, 136) transmitting the actuating force independently of the strut (40) for rotation around the axis (B) of the brake actuating device (18) and is rotatable against the frictional resistance thereof only as long as this does not surpass a given value. In this way, the strut (40) is prevented from unnecessary or over-adjustment upon particularly forceful actuation of the brake.
