    • A voltage regulator for control of a vehicle generator. The voltage regulator is selectably responsive to a voltage representing the generator output voltage at the alternator output terminal, or to an external voltage sensed at a load or source point on the vehicle. The voltage regulator determines the relationship between these two sensed voltages and in response thereto chooses one of the sensed voltages for use in controlling the generator output by controlling the field excitation current input thereto. Certain conditions also cause the voltage regulator to latch in a mode where it is controlled only by one of the alternator output terminal voltage or the external voltage. Manual resetting may be required to discontinue the latched operational mode.

    • A hand-held work tool has a housing with a carburetor heater and a grip heater. An internal combustion engine is mounted in the housing and has a crankshaft and an ignition system. The ignition system has a pole wheel with permanent magnets fastened sequentially at a periphery of the pole wheel in the circumferential direction. Charge armatures are mounted in the housing and close the magnetic circuit between neighboring permanent magnets. The charge armatures have legs and excitation coils mounted on the legs. Upon rotation of the pole wheel, the permanent magnets generate an electric current in the excitation coils, wherein a first set of excitation coils is combined to a first partial generator and connected to an electric circuit of the carburetor heater and a second set of the excitation coils is combined to a second partial generator and connected to an electric circuit of the grip heater such that the electric current is supplied respectively to the carburetor heater and the grip heater. The excitation coils of the first set are arranged in a row adjacent to one another in the circumferential direction. The excitation coils of the second set are arranged in a row adjacent to one another in the circumferential direction.

    • A generator control unit (200) includes a field current modulator (212) that repeatedly switches between an ON state and an OFF state to control the flow of field current to the generator (20), a free-wheeling path (216) that feeds excitation current from the generator (20) back to the generator (20) as a field current component when the field current modulator (212) is in the OFF state, and an impedance circuit (220) that selectively and temporarily absorbs excitation current in the free-wheeling path (216) to reduce voltage overshoot of the generator (20) upon occurrence of an operating transition, such as a transition from high load to low load. In one implementation, the impedance circuit (220) is an RC circuit and a by-pass switch (222) is provided across the RC circuit. When excitation current in the free-wheeling path (216) is not to be absorbed by the RC circuit, the by-pass switch (222) is ON, thereby providing a low-impedance path for the excitation current. A by-pass driver (230) controls the by-pass switch (222) to change the by-pass switch (222) from ON to OFF based on one or more detection signals, e.g., indicating a load transition or power-up, thereby introducing the impedance circuit (220) into the free-wheeling path (216) to effect decay of the excitation current from the generator (20).

    • An excitation control system for a generator includes an SCR bridge for providing an excitation voltage to the input of the generator; a regulator for regulating the excitation voltage; and a sensing sub-system for providing an electrical signal, such a generator current or generator watts, which is related to the output of the generator. The generator includes a circuit breaker for the one or more alternating current phases output by the generator. An output of the circuit breaker has a signal with a true state when the circuit breaker is closed and the generator is on-line and with a false state when the circuit breaker is open and the generator is off-line. A comparator provides a validation signal when the generator electrical signal is greater than a predetermined signal, such as minimum generator current or minimum generator watts, respectively. An OR gate qualifies the signal of the output of the circuit breaker with the validation signal and provides a qualified signal therefrom. Trip and protection logic employs the qualified signal for protecting or tripping the generator.
