The distribution point unit may include a first port to couple the distribution point unit to an optical data network to exchange communication data between the distribution point unit and the service provider, and a second port to couple the distribution point unit to an electrical data network to exchange the communication data between the subscribers and the distribution point unit. The distribution point unit may also include a third port to couple the distribution point unit to an electrical device, the third port being configured to provide control data to control the electrical device.

摘要： Methods and apparatuses are provided to modify existing overlay system architectures in a cost effective manner to meet the growing demand for narrowcast services and to position the existing overlay systems for additional future modifications. The implementations of the improved overlay system of this disclosure re-digitize narrowcast analog signals after they have been QAM modulated and upconverted to RF frequencies and replace the analog narrowcast transmitters with digital narrowcast transmitters. In the fiber nodes, the received narrowcast signals are converted back to analog signals and combined with analog broadcast signals for transmission to the service groups.

摘要： A method of converting legacy HFC CATV cable systems, which transmit data over the optical fiber portion of the system using the optical counterpart of analog RF waveforms, such as RF QAM waveforms transduced to corresponding optical QAM waveforms, to improved HFC CATV systems that transmit data over the optical fiber using optical fiber optimized protocols, such as Ethernet frames and other optical fiber optimized digital transport protocols. According to the method, most aspects of the legacy HFC CATV system may be retained, however at the CATV head end, the optical fiber transmitter system is replaced by an improved system that extracts the underlying symbols from legacy waveforms, packages these symbols into optical fiber optimized packets, and transmits downstream. The legacy optical fiber nodes are replaced with improved nodes capable of receiving the packets and remodulating the symbols into RF waveforms suitable for injection into the system's CATV cable.

An error probability may be determined for said received data and retransmission of portions of said data with error probability above an error threshold may be requested. The variable modulation may include single carrier modulation, orthogonal frequency division modulation, synchronous code division multiple access, and/or from 256 QAM to 2048 QAM or greater. The variable encoding may include forward error correction code, which may include low density parity check code.

The subscriber terminal ms receives and analyzes the going-down control data from the information distribution transmission center HE and is informed of the transmission schedule, and acquires the information to be transmitted based on the obtained transmission plan, stored it in a large scale memory, and reads the information from the memory. A video on-demand system can be realized with a relatively small investment, and the centralization of traffic is mitigated, the network resource is used efficiently, and rational charging is enabled.

摘要： An optical cable television system provides a large channel capacity and uses shared resources, whereby the more expensive hardware is shared over a large number of customers so as to minimize the cost per customer. A video switch network is provided which minimizes the temptation of subscribers to pirate signals since pay per view or on demand signals are provided only upon request of someone within a node corresponding to a neighborhood. An on demand program center continuously plays programs, such as movies, at time-staggered starts such that any subscriber will have only very minimal delays before seeing a particular program which is requested. A tuneable optical filter is provided in order to switch video signals onto an optical fiber going to the node in a particular neighborhood. An arrangement uses in-fiber grating in order to remove and insert different optical frequencies. Local insertion of various program sources, such as local commercials, is accomplished effectively by making such insertion at a relatively high point in the video distribution chain. An interface arrangement to provide on demand video signals to telephone company twisted pair wires is utilized.
