    • An information dissemination system comprises an Internet-connected server adapted for gathering information from plural sources, and sorting the information according to subscriber preferences. The sorted information is transmitted via the Internet to a subscriber's Internet Appliance (IA) as electronic documents, where the documents are downloaded to a connected playback device. The playback device may be disconnected from the PC, and the information electronic documents rendered as speech to a speaker in the playback device by a text-to-speech system. In a preferred embodiment annotation is added at the Internet-connected server to control speech characteristics, such as inflection, upon playback. In some embodiments updates may be made by radio with the playback device disconnected from the IA.

    • Methods and apparatuses are provided for transmitters and receivers for conveying and retrieving important system information carried in a multi-carrier modulation system for which the data stream is organized in multiple physical layer pipes (PLP). This is particularly important when broadcasters share the same physical channel. In one aspect of the present principles this is accomplished by assigning a PLP as a system PLP. The system PLP will carry information such as the mapping between a broadcaster and its PLPs and special messages like the Emergency Alert System and Amber Alert messages. In another aspect of the present principles, this information is carried in signaling data of the signal, instead of a PLP. In yet another aspect of the present principles, this is accomplished by a signaling parameter, which identifies the broadcaster associated with each PLP.

For example, in such scenarios, merely the preset stations may be marked or defined as a favorite. In one or more embodiments, presets or favorites may be presented or organized based on characteristics of a user or other attributes, such as the time of day. In this manner, content management may be provided while promoting safe driving.

    • A transmitting/receiving system and a data processing method are provided. The receiving system includes a receiving unit, a first processing unit, and a second processing unit. The receiving unit receives a broadcast signal including mobile service data and an FIC segment from at least one slot. A transmission frame includes a plurality of sub-frames for receiving at least one ensemble and at least one mobile service, with a sub-frame comprising a plurality of slots. The first processing unit extracts FIC segments each having a different FIC chunk major protocol version from the broadcast signal and acquires a number of the corresponding FIC segment, a number of the last FIC segment, and FIC chunk major protocol version information from each segment header of the extracted FIC segments. The second processing unit obtains an FIC chunk including signaling information between at least one ensemble and at least one mobile service frame from respective payloads of the FIC segments based upon the acquired number of the corresponding FIC segment, number of the last FIC segment, and FIC chunk major protocol version information.
