    • A portable headlight assembly for illuminating a surgical site and moves with the surgeon, the headlight assembly having a headlight source, such as a HID lamp, to illuminate via a light cable coupled to receive and transmit the illumination in the range of natural daylight between 5000 and 6700 degrees Kelvin, a power supply that couples to the HID lamp when the light cable is located to receive focused light from it, and a control that monitors the operation of the headlight source and the portable power supply and is responsive to temperature of the portable power supply and radiation supplying illumination. The light cable extends between the HID lamp to guide illumination from the HID lamp and its reflector to a lens carried on a head strap worn by a practitioner for delivering the illumination to the surgical site.

    • A cell for a vacuum ultraviolet plasma light source, the cell having a closed sapphire tube containing at least one noble gas. Such a cell does not have a metal housing, metal-to-metal seals, or any other metal flanges or components, except for the electrodes (in some embodiments). In this manner, the cell is kept to a relatively small size, and exhibits a more uniform heating of the gas and cell than can be readily achieved with a hybridized metal/window cell design. These designs generally result in higher plasma temperatures (a brighter light source), shorter wavelength output, and lower optical noise due to fewer gas convection currents created between the hotter plasma regions and surrounding colder gases. These cells provide a greater amount of output with wavelengths in the vacuum ultraviolet range than do quartz or fused silica cells. These cells also produce continuous spectral emission well into the infrared range, making them a broadband light source.

    • The invention specifies a starting circuit arrangement for starting at least one discharge lamp by applying an electrical starting voltage pulse to the discharge lamp, the starting circuit arrangement having the following features: at least one source circuit arrangement for providing an electrical primary voltage pulse, at least one starting circuit for providing the starting voltage pulse, and at least one inductive coupling element for inductively coupling-in the primary voltage pulse into the starting circuit for the purpose of generating the starting voltage pulse. The starting circuit arrangement is characterized by the fact that the inductive coupling element has a transformation ratio for a voltage transformation which is selected from the range of from 1/25 to 1/400. In addition, the invention also specifies a method for starting a discharge lamp by applying a starting voltage pulse using the starting circuit arrangement as claimed in one of the preceding claims, having the following method steps: a) forming a starting resonant circuit with a discharge lamp connected in parallel, and b) generating the starting voltage pulse in the starting resonant circuit. In particular, the starting circuit arrangement is used for starting VIP lamps, it being possible for the VIP lamps also to be started again in the hot state during operation at temperatures of from 500° C. to 1000° C.
