    • The present invention provides an electric toothbrush providing oral cavity position detection during operation comprising: a handle body (11) having a longitudinal axis; a receiver body (13) extending from the handle body (11) along said longitudinal axis, wherein the receiver body (13) has: (i) an engaging portion (15) distal the handle body (11) and configured to removably engage a replaceable toothbrush head (99); and (ii) a base portion (17) opposing the engaging portion (15), wherein the base portion (17) adjoins the handle body (11); an electric motor contained in the handle body (11); a drive shaft (19), operatively connected to the electric motor, extending along the longitudinal axis from the motor and at least partially into the receiver body (13); wherein the receiver body (13) is elastically deformable relative to said longitudinal axis; and a 3-axis force sensor (23), is operatively connected to the base portion (17), configured to obtain 3-axis force data for oral cavity position detection during operation.

    • A dental system including a computer and a display, and one or more dental sensors communicating with the computer. Some of the dental sensors could be operative to provide information or an image of one or more oral components and communicate the image to the computer or computer memory. The image stored in the memory could be a graphic image and the information could also include an image and a predetermined dental treatment protocol. It could be an X-ray image, a two-dimensional image, a three-dimensional image, a panoramic image, and a CT image. This superimposed dental image, received from a number of dental sensors, and the dental instrument image facilitates correction of errors and inaccuracies in instrument location and/or angle of dental instrument positioning and tooth penetration as well as various measurements such as number and length of root canals and other parameters required for performing an accurate dental procedure.

    • An apical position detector (40) for use in dental endodontics includes an electronic controller (42) coupled to a conductive probe (46) and a lip electrode (48). The probe (46) is positioned in a root canal (60) and the lip electrode contacts another location on the patient's body. The controller (46) produces a test signal as a combination of signals at selected frequencies. The controller (46) then monitors a voltage of the probe (46) and extracts the amplitude and phase of each of the frequency components of the voltage at the probe (46). Test scores are generated from summations of the amplitudes and/or phases of the various frequency components to determine when the impedance between the probe (46) and the lip electrode (48) changes from a primarily reactive impedance to a primarily resistive impedance. A first test score is displayed to indicate when the impedance changes from a reactive to a resistive impedance. The second test score indicates when the measurement conditions are unsatisfactory. The test scores are displayed in bar graph or similar form.
