    • A basket style carrier includes first and second carrier units connected together through a common medial handle structure (22a, 22b, 30, 32, 40, 42). Each of the first and second carrier units is collapsible into a substantially flat-form structure. The first carrier unit includes a first side wall (12), a first handle wall (22a, 30, 40), first and second opposed end walls (16a, 16b; 18a, 18b) each disposed between the first side wall and the first handle wall, and a first bottom wall (20a, 20b). The first bottom wall includes first (20a) and second (20b) bottom panels. The second carrier unit includes a second side wall (14), a second handle wall (22b, 32, 42), third and fourth opposed end walls (26a, 26b; 28a, 28b) each disposed between the second side wall and the second handle wall, and a second bottom wall (24a, 24b). The second bottom wall includes third (24a) and fourth (24b) bottom panels. The first and second handle walls are connected by at least one hinged connection (86) to form the common medial handle structure.

Each insert is hingedly connected to a handle panel structure for reinforcing and improving the ergonomics of the handle opening. Each handle panel structure includes a reinforcing portion that reinforces the weight-bearing edge (146a, 646a) of the handle opening. In certain embodiments, this reinforcing portion (152a) is formed by folding the multiple panels (154a, 156a, 158a, 160a) of the handle panel structure into a hollow box beam shape with a handle edge that reinforcingly aligns with the weight-bearing edge of the handle opening to provide structural integrity.     • A fully enclosed carton for carrying heavy loads with a reinforcement insert (58a, 58b) for the handle apertures (50a, 50b) located in the top end flaps (38, 40) of the carton. The paperboard reinforcing insert may be extended as a bridge across the top panel (14) of the carton to prevent tearing of the handle apertures in the top end flaps and also tearing in the top panel (14) of the carton when carrying a heavy load. The carton may have one or more dispensers (70a, 70b) in the top panel which may extend into an adjoining side panel (12, 18). Multiple tear lines may be formed for the dispenser flap in the insert that extends across the top panel to permit easy access to the containers, such as bottles, in the carton. The paperboard reinforcing insert may have a larger aperture (60a, 60b) than the handle aperture in each top end flap to adjust for any imprecision in the alignment of the paperboard insert in forming the carton sleeve from the paperboard blank. When the paperboard insert extends across the top panel and one or more dispensers are formed in the top panel, multiple tear lines may be used to form the flaps in the insert to compensate for any imprecision in the insertion of the insert that extends across the top panel into the carton sleeve when it is being formed.
