Rapid and substantially complete extraction of zinc from zinc and iron containing sulphides is obtained by leaching the sulphides under oxidizing conditions at a temperature above the melting point of sulphur with an aqueous sulphuric acid solution containing at least the stoichiometric amount of acid required to combine with the zinc content of the sulphides as zinc sulphate and, also, containing an additive which is effective to prevent or at least substantially inhibit the molten sulphur from occluding unleached zinc sulphide particles thereby enabling the leaching reaction to continue until substantially all zinc values are extracted. Additives which are suitable for the process include lignins, lignosulphonates, tannin compounds, particularly quebracho, and other tree bark extracts, and alkylaryl sulphonates.

1457428 Paper sizing compositions TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 5 June 1974 [2 July 1973] 31525/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division D2] An aqueous emulsion for sizing paper comprises as the continuous phase an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and sodium lignosulphate, and as the dispersed phase, at least one ketene dimer satisfying the formula wherein R is alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl or alkynyl of at least 8 carbon atoms; a hydroxy substituted derivative of one of the above groups; an at least C 6 cycloalkyl group; an aryl group; an alkaryl group; or an aralkyl group; and where the groups R may be the same or different. The preferred concentrations for each component are: polyvinyl alcohol-0À5 to 15%; sodium lignosulphate-0À01 to 1À5%; and ketene dimer-1 to 25%; all based on the total weight of the emulsion. A condensate of dicyandiamide and formaldehyde may also be present. The composition may be made by mixing the components in water, subjecting the mixture to high shear homogenization and then cooling rapidly to below 30‹ C. Examples are given in which (i) each R is a C 1-8 alkyl group, and (ii) in which the dimer is a mixed tetradecyl/hexadecyl ketene dimer and (iii) in which each R is octyl, tetracosyl, phenyl, benzyl, cyclohexyl, or derived from ricinoleic acid.

This invention relates to the production of dispersing agents from mixtures of spent sulphite liquor solids and Kraft liquor solids. Although appropriate physical mixtures of said solids without further treatment have useful dispersant characteristics for specific applications, the preferred way of preparing improved dispersant compositions from mixtures of said solids consists in heat treating concentrated aqueous solutions thereof for 1 to 3 hours at 100 DEG to 160 DEG C, at pH values higher than 11.0. The heat treatment is preferably performed under simultaneous blowing of air through the reaction mixture. The addition of a crosslinking agent, such as formaldehyde, is optional in cases where the air blowing treatment is not employed during the heat treatment. The dispersing agents of this invention have utility as dye dispersants, carbon black dispersants, clay dispersants, and the like.
