    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine capable of activating catalyst early without impairing fuel economy in various engines. SOLUTION: This multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is provided with branch ports 31, 32, 33, 34 arranged separately from intake and exhaust ports per cylinder and communicating with a combustion chamber in the cylinder, communicating valves 21, 22, 23, 24 mounted per branch port to open and close the ports, a communicating chamber 20 communicating each branch port, a new air supply means 30 for supplying pressurized air into the communicating chamber, an opening and closing timing adjusting means 50 for controlling opening and closing time of an exhaust valve opening and closing the exhaust port, and a control means 61 for operating and controlling the new air supply means, the communicating valves, and the opening and closing timing adjusting means in accordance with engine operation condition. The control means opens, closes, and controls the communicating valves by driving the new air supply means to quicken valve closing time of the exhaust valve in the cylinder in an exhaust process than normal time and has control mode for opening the communicating valves in the cylinder in the exhaust process from predetermined time in an expansion process to predetermined time in the exhaust process.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carburetor which can effectively prevent afterburning in an exhaust pipe upon abrupt deceleration of an engine.
      SOLUTION: An air cut-off valve 19 for controlling supply of secondary air to an exhaust port via a valve shaft 20 is connected to a diaphragm 21 which cooperates with negative pressure within an inlet pipe. The valve shaft 20 is hermetically extended through a shaft hole 29c of a bearing portion 29. A groove 20A is formed in the valve shaft 20. Pilot air passages 29A, 29B are so provided as to intersect with the shaft hole 29c. A spool valve is composed of the groove 20A of the valve shaft 20 and the pilot air passages 29A, 29B intersecting with the shaft hole 29C. The above constitution is provided integrally with the carburetor, so that the carburetor can provide a second air valve function and a coasting-richer function.
