    • A servo control apparatus and method controls systems at least partially on the basis of an observable variable that has an absolute value functional relationship with the controlled variable and does not change sign for positive and negative variations from a nominal value. When applied to the positional control of an object, the control system observes a value of a position error signal and maps that signal to two different potentially correct displacement values. Two estimators within the control system are initiated, one using the positive displacement and the other using the negative displacement, and the two estimators each predict the future position of the object and the corresponding position error signal for each estimated position. A new position error signal is detected and compared to the two estimated position error signals. After sufficient system evolution, the control system can select one or the other of the estimators as being correct and the associated displacement is identified as correct and is used for future positioning applications, preferably until the sign of the displacement of the head again becomes ambiguous. The control system can be used in combination with other control mechanisms including those using complimentary control information that provides more complete positioning information. The control method, system and apparatus find particularly advantageous application in magnetic storage hard disk drive systems.

    • Methods and apparatus for controlling a polyphase motor in implantable medical device applications are provided. In one embodiment, the polyphase motor is a brushless DC motor. The back emf of a selected phase of the motor is sampled while a drive voltage or the selected phase is substantially zero. Various embodiments utilize sinusoidal or trapezoidal drive voltages. The sampled back emf provides an error signal indicative of the positional error of the rotor. In one embodiment, the sampled back emf is normalized with respect to a commanded angular velocity of the rotor to provide an error signal proportional only to the positional error of the motor rotor. The error signal is provided as feedback to control a frequency of the drive voltage. A speed control generates a speed control signal corresponding to a difference between a commanded angular velocity and an angular velocity inferred from the frequency of the drive voltage. The speed control signal is provided as feedback to control an amplitude of the drive voltage. In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a brushless DC motor and a commutation control. The commutation control provides a commutation control signal for a selected phase of the motor in accordance with a sampled back electromotive force (emf) of that phase. The back emf of the phase is sampled only while the corresponding drive voltage for the selected phase is substantially zero, wherein a frequency of a drive voltage of the motor is varied in accordance with the commutation control signal.

    • In an electronic control unit, a control constant stored in a program memory is transmitted to a data memory via a serial communication circuit. First control circuit section (master station) and second control circuit section (substation) mutually communicate through series-parallel converters. The master station includes regular transmission device and storage constant confirmation processing device. The substation includes regular report device and confirmation reply device to a data transmitted from the master station. A constant set data transmitted from the master station by regular transmission device is stored in the data memory at the time of normal receiving. Confirmation information such as sum value of the entire data in the data memory is reported by regular report device. At the master station, if there is any error in the confirmation information, a constant set data is retransmitted with regular transmission device. Reliability of data in the data memory is improved.

    • A technique for controlling a switching circuit, such as a relay, includes one or more sensing circuits that generate signals based upon the presence of an actuating object and upon a randomly applied strobe signal. The generated signals are sampled and are used as a basis for determining the state of an output signal. The sensing circuit may generate the signals based upon capacitive coupling with the actuating object. The randomization of the sampling provides enhanced immunity to periodic or cyclic noise. Where more than one sensing circuit is included, the output of the circuits may be considered together for determining the state of the output signal, such as based upon predetermined ranges of signal levels. Signals of the sensing circuit may be sampled in the absence of the strobe to provide an indication of the relative noise level. If the noise level is determined to be elevated, the output signal may not change states.
