    • A continuous process for producing a propylene-ethylene block copolymer having well-balanced properties of impact strength, stiffness, processability, etc. using a highly active catalyst, with a superior productivity is provided,which process comprisesa first polymerization step (I), carried out using a catalyst system consisting of [A] a solid catalyst component containing Ti, Mg, halogen and a polyvalent carboxylic acid ester as indispensable components, [B] an organoaluminum compound catalyst component and [C] an electron-donating compound,using two or more continuous polymerization vessels, andfeeding monomer(s) of ethylene/(ethylene+propylene) of 0 to 5% by weight, to carry out polymerization composed mainly of propylene, so as to give 60 to 95% of the total polymerized quantity;a continuous addition of a glycol compound (D) expressed by the formulaR.sup.1 --(OC.sub.m H.sub.2m).sub.n --OR.sup.2wherein m is an integer of 2 or more, n is an integer of 3 or more, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each are H atom, an alkyl group or a monovalent organic group containing a hetero atom of O, N, P, S, Si, etc., and may be same or different; so as to give a value of [D]/Ti in [A]=1 to 100 mols/atom; and successively,a polymerization step (II) carried out using one or more continuous polymerization vessels, andfeeding monomers of ethylene/(ethylene+propylene) of 10 to 100% by weight, to carry out a propylene-ethylene random copolymerization composed of ethylene in a relatively large quantity, so as to give 5 to 40% by weight of the total polymerized quantity.

    • The present invention relates to a procatalyst composition for the polymerization of alpha-olefines, which has been prepared in steps, in which is arranged a carrier agent based on at least one inorganic oxide, having few or no hydroxyl groups on its surface, and the carier agent is reacted with the magnesium compound and one or more transition metal compounds of the groups IVB and VB of the periodic table. It has been observed that such a catalyst is most-advantageous when a) this carrier agent is impregnated with a mixture of the Mg compound and one or more compounds of a transition metal of the groups IVb or Vb of the periodic table, which dissolves the Mg compound, and b) by chlorinating with a compound that does not contain titanium so that 1) the carrier is first treated with a mixture in the form of a solution of the Mg compound and the transition metal compound and the product thus obtained is chlorinated, or 2) the carrier is first chlorinated and subsequently treated with the above mixture in the form of a solution, or 3) the Mg compound and the transition metal compound are impregnated into the carrier without any separate dissolving and the product thus obtained is chlorinated.

    • A transition metal containing catalyst useful for the polymerization of .alpha.-olefins is prepared by (A) forming in an inert atmosphere which excludes oxygen and moisture a slurry of (1) a porous inorganic oxide support material selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, or a combination of silica and alumina, said support material containing not greater than about 5 millimoles of hydroxyl groups per gram of support material and a particle size not greater than about 10 microns and a surface area of from about 50 to about 800 m.sup.2 /g in an inert organic liquid medium; (B) mixing said slurry with (2) an alkoxide and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to saturate the surface of the support material: (C) mixing the product form (B) with (3) a titanium compound or a combination of a titanium compound and (4) a vanadium compound and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to allow complete reaction of the titanium compound and the vanadium compound with the organomagnesium moieties remaining on the solid support; (D) mixing the product from (C) with an inert organic solution of (5) a Group IIIA metal alkyl halide at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to complete the reduction of the titanium and vanadium, if present, compounds to their final oxidation state.

    • The invention relates to a method for the preparation of a solid procatalyst composition for a catalyst system intended for the polymerization of olefins, wherein a magnesium halide, such as magnesium chloride, is dissolved and/or slurried in a mono-carboxylic acid alkyl ester, such as ethyl acetate, is impregnated into a support material, dried, treated with an organometallic compound or a silicon compound and thereafter with a transition metal compound. The invention also relates to such a procatalyst composition and its use together with a cocatalyst for the polymerization of olefins. According to the invention it has been possible to increase the activity of the catalyst composition by using a silanated support material, such as silanated silica, which is then treated with an organometallic or silicon compound before treatment with a transition metal compound. The silanated silica is preferably a silicon dioxide which has been heat-treated at 1000.degree.-200.degree. and thereafter treated with hexamethyldisilazane and contains 3-6% carbon. The organometallic compound is preferably an aluminum alkyl compound, such as triethylaluminum, and the transition metal compound is preferably titanium tetrachloride.
