    • The present invention achieves an exposure control for getting an image with the best SN without a mechanical iris and an image processing which is good at the color-reappearance and the gradation property with a simple digital processing circuit. When the film image is read by the line sensor 14 which has an electric shutter function, the electric shutter, the film feeding speed and the analog amplifier 16 are controlled totally so as to obtain images with the best SN from high to low transmittance negatives. And, when the dot sequential R, G, B digital signals are processed digitally, the offset values and the gain volumes of the respective R, G, B are calculated based on the maximum value and the minimum value which are detected by the respective R, G, B digital signals, the calculated offset values of the respective R, G, B are added to the dot sequential R, G, B digital signals which are obtained during the re-scanning, and the calculated gain volumes of the respective R, G, B are multiplied by the offset dot-sequential R, G, B digital signals so as to adjust the white balance and the black balance.

    • The improved image inputting apparatus for reading the image recorded on a transmission original comprises: a light source; an image sensor for photoelectrically reading the light that has issued from the light source and which has been transmitted through the original; an imaging lens for permitting the transmitted light to be focused on the image sensor; a focusing device for automatically adjusting a focus of the imaging lens; and a control device for controlling the focusing device before starting the reading of a new image group such that only the first frame of the image group is subjected to one-step automatic focusing or two-step automatic focusing consisting of coarse and fine adjustments whereas the other frames are not subjected to focusing but image reading is performed adopting the focus state of the first frame or are subjected to automatic focusing comprising only fine adjustment. The apparatus can allow projecting light that bears the image recorded on strips or slides to form a satisfactorily and accurately focused image on an image sensor such as CCD sensor, and also permit rapid and efficient image reading and thereby contribute to an improvement in the efficiency with which output images can be produced.

    • An improvement to a motion picture distribution system providing a high quality motion picture system compatible with pre-existing NTSC systems and improving horizontal and vertical detail. The improvement includes a television camera having an anamorphic lens, an encoder coupled to the television camera, and a decoder at a receiver. The anamorphic lens can have an aspect ratio of two to one, and compresses an entire motion picture viewing field into the NTSC-standard, four to three aspect ratio, to produce a horizontally-compressed image. The horizontally-compressed image is output from the television camera as a horizontally-compressed-image signal. The encoder encodes the horizontally-compressed-image signal as a composite-wideband-video signal having increased bandwidth, and generates a subcarrier-composite signal. The composite-wideband-video signal may be directly broadcast to a receiver or recorded by a recording device for subsequent transfer to a receiver, if the receiver is NTSC-compatible, the decoder generates a decoded-subcarrier-composite signal for use by the NTSC-compatible receiver. If the receiver includes a high quality system, then the high quality system uses the subcarrier-composite signal directly, demodulating the entire bandwidth of the composite-wideband-video signal to generate a motion picture image having a quality similar to a 35-mm film distribution print.
