    • An improved key pin and action pin that is resistant to corrosion, is very durable and has surfaces with a very low coefficient of friction. The pins are preferably made of aluminum or aluminum alloy with a hardened anodized oxide surface. The anodized pins may be polished to provide a surface with a very low coefficient of friction that is also very durable. As a consequence of the low friction and corrosion resistance, piano actions using the pins have less resistance providing an action with a lighter “feel” and consistency. Longevity of the components of the action and the pins is also greatly improved especially for pianos located in humid climates where traditional pins experience corrosion.

    • A brand-new player piano is designed to have a compatibility with the conventional player piano and the electronic musical instrument based on the MIDI standard while providing a capability of playing a highly skilled music performance such as the performance technique of half stroke. The player piano creates a new version of performance information which uses a key-depression event frame in addition to a string-striking event frame and a key-release event frame. Herein, the string-striking event frame contains extensional information for a string-striking velocity, while the key-release event frame contains extensional information for a key-release velocity. The extensional information is not specifically defined by the MIDI standard and is neglected by the conventional player piano. The key-depression event frame, which is newly introduced by this player piano and is neglected by the conventional player piano, represents a note number and a key-depression velocity as well as extensional information for the key-depression velocity. Using the extensional information, it is possible to control each of the velocities more precisely. The performance information is recorded on a recording media. At a reproduction, the player piano produces trajectory data and position data with respect to each of the keys on the basis of the performance information. The trajectory data represent a key-depression-uniform-motion trajectory and a key-depression-slow-down trajectory along which a key moves when being depressed. The trajectory data also represent a key-release-uniform-motion trajectory and a key-release-slow-up trajectory along which the key moves when being released.

    • An improved combination acoustic-mode and electronic-mode piano is provided which includes a hammer shank stop rail that intercepts the hammer shank, when in the electronic mode, so that the hammer cannot complete its normal travel and cannot strike its corresponding string(s) when its piano key is actuated. The hammer shank stop rail is actuated by an intermediate crank that, in turn, is actuated by a pedal dowel attached to one of the pedals of the piano. When operated in the acoustic mode, the stop rail occupies a position that will not interfere with the hammer shank's movements, and when in the electronic mode, the stop rail intercepts the hammer shank so that its associated hammer will not be able to travel all the way into contact with their associated string. A second embodiment operates the stop rail by use of a cable and cam mechanism. A third embodiment uses a hand-actuator to operate the stop rail via a dowel and intermediate crank. In a fourth embodiment, a fluid-actuated hammer shank stop rail is located in a position similar to the mechanical hammer shank stop rail described hereinabove. The fluid-actuated hammer shank stop rail includes a rigid portion that provides support across the width of the piano and an expandable portion that is resilient and can be enlarged by the use of an internal fluid pressure, which intercepts the hammer shank before the associated hammer can strike their associated string. A fifth embodiment of a combination dual-mode piano is provided that utilizes a spring-loaded wippen-disabler to prevent the wippen from being actuated by the key tail when the associated key is struck. When placed into the electronic mode, the wippen-disabler is rotated into a position in which one of its extended members is forced against the bottom portion of the wippen and raises the wippen high enough into a position so that the capstan screw of the key tail cannot come into contact with the bottom surface of the wippen. In addition, a different portion of the wippen-disabler is rotated so that its associated spring comes into contact with the top of the key tail, thereby providing the person playing the piano with some mechanical feedback that will approximate the feel of a standard key action.

    • A damper unit for a piano is provided in which the position of a hammer stop rail for contacting the hammer shanks before the hammers strike the strings can be changed from an inoperative retracted position to a stop position with a relatively small drive force and the hammer stop rail is firmly and reliably positioned at the stop position. Stop rail support arms for supporting the hammer stop rail are connected, via linkage mechanisms composed of links and lever arms, to a rotary shaft. By pulling a wire that is connected to the rotary shaft, the rotary shaft is rotated, such that the hammer stop rail can be positioned, via the linkages, at the stop position and the retracted position, in which the hammer stop rail does not contact the hammer shanks. As compared with the conventional damper unit, the position of the hammer stop rail can be changed with a relatively small drive force. Moreover, the hammer stop rail is thus fixedly positioned at the stop position, thereby reliably dampening the hammer striking sound. The linkage mechanisms may be replaced with a cam mechanism that contacts the stop rail support arms for changing the position of the hammer stop rail.
