    • Electronic percussion instruments with enhanced playing areas and methods and systems for generating electrical signals in response to impacts to a playing surface are disclosed. A semi-permeable playing surface covering an acoustic noise reducing cavity of an electronic percussion instrument may receive an impact within a predefined impact region, and an electrical signal may be generated in response by an electromechanical sensor that senses the impact. In many instances, the generated electrical signal may be configured to be equivalent in magnitude to any other electrical signal generated by the electromechanical sensor, in response to any other received impact within the same predefined impact region.

    • An electronic percussion instrument may include a percussion member that generates vibrations when percussed, a vibration resonance member, a vibration damping member, and an electronic sound generation unit. The vibration resonance member may include a hub portion, a plurality of radial portions extending radially from the hub portion, and a plurality of spiral portions. Each of the spiral portions may be disposed between and connects respective two of the radial portions. Each of the radial portions may be connected to a respective adjacent one of the radial portions by one or more of the spiral portions. The vibration damping member, disposed between the percussion member and the vibration resonance member, may propagate the vibrations generated by the percussion member to the vibration resonance member. The electronic sound generation unit, connected to the vibration resonance member, may sense the vibrations through the vibration resonance member and generate an electronic percussion sound.

    • The disclosed invention is a programmable switch for configuring circuit topologies. The switch can be any type of mechanical or electronic switch. Every setting of the switch can be programmed by a user, selecting topologies such as circuit elements in series, in parallel, in phase or out of phase. In a dual switch embodiment, the first switch selects the circuit elements to be used, and the second switch configures those selected elements in a wide variety of topologies. This division in switch circuit design between element selection and then topology provides an extremely wide range of circuit topologies available, unlike prior art designs.

    • The disclosed volume-adjustment circuit sets the volume of each pickup setting in a topology-setting switch independent of other pickup topology settings in the switch. The volume-adjustment circuit has three parts: (1) a pickup topology selection switch that selects separate pickup-topologies, (2) separate and independent signal paths for chosen pickup-topologies, and (3) separate volume adjustment circuits in electrically separate and independent signal paths. Thus, the disclosure provides separate volume adjustment for selected pickup topologies of the pickup topology selection switch.

    • In one embodiment, an electronic cymbal system includes a first pickup configured to generate an electrical signal representative of vibrations in a first cymbal, and a controller configured to receive the first electrical signal and to process the first electrical signal to generate an output. The controller includes a digital signal processor (DSP) configured to subject a version of the first electrical signal to a digital signal processing technique. The digital signal processing technique includes one or more of dynamic range compression, expansion, frequency equalization, harmonic excitation, comb filtering, and pitch shifting. The cymbals may be any of variety of known cymbals, such as hi-hat, crash and ride cymbals, and may be of the perforated type configured to reduce noise for indoor use. Lighting control may be provided to illuminate the cymbal for functional or aesthetic purposes.
