    • A microprocessor-controlled data-processing system is used to process key strokes from a musical keyboard and output a series of note events (e.g., via midi) to a tone-producing device. The microprocessor runs software which splits the keyboard into at least two zones: A root-select zone which consists of at least one octave of keys, and a strum-trigger zone. Pre-determined notes lists, or chords, are stored in an array in the system's memory. The array classifies the note lists according to (1) chord root (C, C#, D, etc.), and (2) chord type (e.g., major, minor, etc.). Different keys within the strum-trigger zone are pre-assigned to different chord types. Depression of a strum-trigger key as a root-select key is depressed causes the data-processing system to (1) select one of the note lists, and (2) output an arpeggio of the notes contained within the selected list. The note list is selected from the array based on the root note corresponding with the depressed root-select key and the chord type corresponding with the depressed strum-trigger key. Hence, each strum-trigger key performs the dual function of chord type selection and strum triggering.

    • Detector detects movement of a hammer (driven member) that strikes a string (abutted member) by moving in response to operation of a key. On the basis of detection outputs of the detector and a given abutment-presuming reference value, it is presumed that the hammer has struck or abutted against the string. For example, performance event data is generated on the basis of the abutment presumption. In order to minimize errors due to variation over time or aging of a hammer action mechanism, a determination section determines that the hammer has, actually or with a high probability, reached an abutting position where the hammer abuts against the string, and the abutment-presuming condition in accordance with the determination result. It is determined that the hammer has reached the abutting position, by comparing, on the basis of detection outputs of the detector, movement of the hammer toward the string and movement of the hammer away from the string. By thus making a string-striking determination in view of operation of the hammer not only before the string striking but also after the string striking, it is possible to accurately determine whether or not the string has been struck.

    • A musical tone synthesizing apparatus is designed to simulate a physical phenomenon of a non-electronic musical instrument providing a sound generating element and an activating element. Herein, the sound generating element has its specific resonance characteristic, while the activating element imparts an excitation vibration to the sound generating element. This apparatus contains a plurality of loop circuits each including at least one delay element, wherein these loop circuits are connected together such that a signal picked up from one loop circuit is introduced into another loop circuit. This signal circulating through each loop circuit is delayed by a delay time which is controlled by a predetermined parameter corresponding to a desirable musical tone to be generated. In addition, an excitation signal, corresponding to the excitation vibration, is applied to at least one of the loop circuits. Preferably, the non-electronic musical instrument is a piano, so that the sound generating element is a string and the activating element is a hammer which strikes the string. Further, number of the loop circuits is set corresponding to the number of strings to be provided with respect to each key of the piano.

    • A musical sound synthesizing apparatus which simulates a sound generating mechanism of a string instrument by using an electronic circuit comprises a driver for applying data, an adder, a delay unit for storing data temporarily, a low pass filter for processing data, and a word length designating unit for designating a word length (address width) of the delay unit. The adder, delay unit and low pass filter form a loop-shaped circuit, with their corresponding input ends and output ends connected with each other. The word length designating unit corrects a word length of the delay unit in accordance with a phase delay of the low pass filter or in accordance with the number of stages of the pipeline structure of the loop. In the case where a musical sound of the type generated by touching or hitting strings is synthesized, the driver reads at least two series of data stored beforehand and applies the read data to one of the inputs to the adder. While, in the case where a musical sound of the type generated by rubbing strings is synthesized, the driver applies, to one of the inputs to the adder, data calculated on the basis of at least two data read out from mutually different addresses in the delay unit and data (corresponding to the velocity of a bow) inputted thereto externally.
