    • A clock is adjusted by obtaining a first plurality of samples and a second plurality of samples associated with a preamble portion of a data packet. The first plurality of samples and the second plurality of samples are sampled using a clock. A first intermediate value is determined based at least in part on the first plurality of samples and a second intermediate value is determined based at least in part on the second plurality of samples. An ending value associated with an end of the preamble portion is determined based at least in part on the first intermediate value and the second intermediate value. The clock is adjusted based at least in part on the ending value without use of a second order timing loop.

    • A method and apparatus demodulate pre-formatted information embedded in an optical recording medium. The demodulation includes (a) receiving a wobble signal representing data symbols frequency-modulated on a carrier frequency, (b) generating a phase delta signal representing a phase difference between the wobble signal and a corresponding locked signal having the carrier frequency, (c) first sampling the phase delta signal at a data sampling interval to produce first values, (d) second sampling the phase delta signal at each halfway of the data sampling interval to generate second values, (e) determining, based on a difference between two successive second values, if the first sampling is performed at timing corresponding to an end of each data symbol, and (e) adjusting sampling timing of the first sampling towards the timing corresponding to each end of the data symbols, if the sampling timing does not corresponds to the end of each data symbol.

    • A system and method described for avoiding catastrophic error sequences in a media code sequence of symbols for data storage on a storage medium according to EPRML. The system and method includes modulation encoding user data which is to be stored on the storage medium using a modulation encoder. The modulation encoder outputs a channel code modulation output symbol sequence. The modulation code is defined according to a modulation criteria wherein the set of all possible modulation output symbol sequences is constrained in a manner which excludes certain excluded modulation output symbol sequences. A precoder precodes the channel code modulation output symbol sequence according to a precoding transfer function. The precoding transfer function transforms the channel code modulation output symbol sequence into a media code sequence of symbols and the precoding transfer function is defined so that when modulation encoding is performed according to the modulation criteria, the media code sequence of symbols is constrained to exclude EPRML catastrophic error sequences of greater than a determined length. The combination of the modulation encoding and the precoding prevents the media code sequence of symbols from including EPRML catastrophic error sequences greater than the determined length.
