    • In a hydrostatic continuously variable transmission, a pump cylinder of a swashplate type hydraulic pump is integrally and coaxially coupled with a motor cylinder of a swashplate type hydraulic motor. A number of distributor valves are radially arranged for reciprocal movement between radially inner and outer positions to put a large number of pump ports in the hydraulic pump into communication with the higher and lower pressure oil passages, and an eccentric ring circumscribed about the distributor valves is connected to an input member of the hydraulic pump for movement between a clutch OFF position and a clutch ON position. A clutch spring is connected to the eccentric ring for biasing the eccentric ring toward the clutch OFF position, and a weight is added to the eccentric ring and adapted to exhibit a centrifugal force for moving the eccentric ring toward the clutch ON position against a spring force of the clutch spring.

The transmission has a valve spool in a spool hole made in a transmission output shaft which rotatably holds the hydraulic pump and hydraulic motor; and the transmission output shaft incorporates outer branch oil paths which are connected with an outer passage and open to the spool hole, and an inner branch oil path which is connected with an inner passage and open to the spool hole. A right groove on the outer periphery of the valve spool enables the valve spool to move between a clutch release position in which the outer branch oil paths and the inner branch oil path are connected and a clutch engagement position in which a central land of the valve spool at least covers a high pressure clutch port; and the right groove is connected to the outside through a discharge oil path with an orifice.

    • A friction clutch wherein the distance between a clutch center member on a driven shaft side and a pressure plate, between which an alternate arrangement of clutch friction plates on a driving shaft side and clutch plates on the driven shaft side is disposed, is increased or decreased to disconnect or connect transmission of power between the driving shaft side and the driven shaft side. The driven shaft is constructed so that the clutch center member and the pressure plate are disposed for relative displacement in a direction of rotation. The friction clutch includes a conversion mechanism for converting a relative displacement in the direction of rotation caused by a countertorque inputted to the friction clutch into a relative displacement in a direction of an axis of rotation to increase the distance between the clutch center member and the pressure plate.
