The image forming apparatus includes an automatic document feeder (ADF), a flat glass, an ADF glass to scan a document fed by the ADF, and an image sensor to read information from the document. 摘要： A document reproduction system with a first large imaging platen on which documents are scanned by moving an imaging system thereunder, and an automatic document feeding system (ADF) for sequentially feeding documents to a directly adjacent smaller second (removable) imaging platen where the same imaging system may be stationarily positioned. A recess is provided between the opposing edges of the first and second platens extending substantially below their upper surface. The ADF has a document lead edge member extendable down into this recess to positively catch and deflect documents away from the upper surface of the second platen after the documents have been moved over this surface and imaged. The first and second platens are abutting at their lower surfaces, below the notch, to define a contiguous lower surface. The recess may be formed by an inclined beveled end of the first platen. The imaging station is preferably not centrally of the second platen, and the second platen reversible, to change the position of the imaging station thereon. The first and second imaging platens have coplanar upper and lower surfaces and are comonly mounted. The ADF has two trays which overlie the first platen and one another.

The scanner frame is arranged to be supported at the ADF main body portion such that it is rotatable. The gear portion is arranged on a rotation axis line of the scanner frame to integrally rotate with the scanner frame. The torque limiter is arranged to apply a resistance to the resistance gear that meshes with the gear portion when the scanner frame rotates from an exposed position to a usage position. The outer cover is attached to the ADF main body portion to cover one portion of the gear portion. The outer cover includes a contacting portion arranged to regulate the movement of the gear portion.

In the case that the document tray is located not at the highest position, not at the lowest position, but at a middle position upon powering on the power source, the document tray is allowed to remain at the middle position as it is without performing the elevation of the document tray. In the case that the document tray is located at the highest position, the document tray is moved down. By reducing the wasteful operation (the initial operation) after powering on the power source, it is possible to reduce the operation time and the efficient sheet processing can be realized.

A document fed from a common document storing unit is guided selectively to a first document read unit included in the electrophotographic copying system or to a second document read unit included in the facsimile transmission system by a document feed passage changeover mechanism which is operated selectively by an operator. A document delivered to the first document read unit is copied by the electrophotographic copying system. A document delivered to the second document read unit is converted into a corresponding electric image signal, and then the electric image signal is applied to a communications line.

摘要： A document copier having an automatic document handler is able to process jobs whose number of document sheets exceed the capacity of the document feeder by including control to stop feeding sheets whenever there is less than a predetermined minimum number greater, than one, of unfed sheets remaining, so that an operator can add more sheets of the same job. Feeding can be reinitiating after the automatic document handler has been stopped, and the stopping feature can be selectively disabled so that all received sheets are fed by the automatic document handler without stopping. Generally, the document feeder will be used with a job processor which treats the last sheet in a received stack, and all preceding sheets, as a job.

摘要： An image reading apparatus is provided with a transparent plate horizontally disposed on which an image reading operation is performed, and a transporting device disposed above the transparent plate for transporting an original sheet to the transparent plate. The image reading apparatus is further provided with a detecting device for detecting through the transparent plate a reflection light from the illuminated portion of the original sheet.
