    • In certain embodiments, a method of fabricating a base plate for piezoelectric actuation, comprises providing a plate having a major surface; striking a first removable portion of the plate in a first direction substantially normal to the major surface to shear the first removable portion relative to the plate by a shear distance that is less than the plate thickness; striking the first removable portion in a second direction substantially opposite the first direction to reduce the shear distance by a reduction in shear that is less than the plate thickness; and leaving the first removable portion in place rather than removing the first removable portion. In other embodiments, the removable portion may be created by lancing one or more portions spanning at least one opening through a base plate adjacent a first side of at least one opening and adjacent a second side of the at least one opening.

    • A servo controller controls the servo system in a disc drive. A proportional integrator component receives the target track signal indicative of a target track and a measured track signal indicative of actual or measured data head position. During seek mode, the proportional integrator provides an output signal based on the measured track signal and the target track signal. A profile generator component provides a profile signal based on the output signal from the proportional integrator. A coarse actuator is driven based on the profile signal. A filter component is coupled to the profile generator and filters the profile signal to provide a filtered profile signal. The fine actuator is driven based on the filtered profile signal.

    • An accurate and time-efficient method and system for self-servowriting wherein at least one reference value used to position the transducer is updated for some, but not all, of the tracks to be written. The reference value(s) is dependent upon a predefined indicium of transducer position, such as the amplitude of the readback signal obtained from a written track when the transducer is positioned on the track. In a first embodiment, updating of the reference value(s) is performed at every Nth track written, where N is a fixed number or range of numbers determined by an expected track-to-track variation of the indicium. The servowriting system may be designed to dynamically increase or decrease N during servowriting in response to actual variations in the indicium. According to a second embodiment, updating is only performed when needed, e.g. when the variation of the measured indicium between two written tracks (not necessarily adjacent tracks) exceeds a predefined threshold value. For systems employing dual-element heads, servowriting accuracy is enhanced by performing a read head adjustment prior to updating of the reference values.

    • A digital servo control system for disk drives is an “embedded” system—one in which servo control information is embedded on the same disk surface as the user data. In contrast to known embedded-servo systems in which a space-consuming series of many dibit pairs is present, the present system provides only a single dibit pair in a fractional positional error (PESF) area. Thus, the disk drive's read head encounters only a single dibit pair per sample period (or per data sector), thus saving valuable disk space that may be used for user data. Various pre-processing methods may be provided so as to pre-process the measurement derived from the single dibit pair per sample period (or data sector), so as to compensate for non-ideal characteristics of the dibit measurement. The system thus provides an accurate and robust servo control system, while sacrificing a minimum amount of valuable disk space to the servo information field.

    • A method and apparatus for recording and/or reproducing signal on or from a recording medium, wherein correct tracking servo signals may be produced so that tracking errors may be detected correctly. The pilot signal from a recording amplifier 3, produced by frequency-dividing system clocks by a frequency divider 2, is recorded on the recording medium by a servo head 21 at the timing of a timing signal GP.sub.1. A tracking servo signal, obtained by reproducing the pilot signal by a recording/reproducing head 22, delaying the resulting signal by a delay circuit 4 and phase-shifting the resulting delayed signal by a phase shifting unit 5, is recorded at the timing of a timing signal GP.sub.2. The pilot signal and the tracking servo signal are reproduced by the recording/reproducing head 22 and the pilot signal is delayed by the delay circuit 4. An XOR circuit 11 takes an XOR between the reproduced tracking servo signal and the delayed pilot signal and the resulting signal of the XOR circuit is sampled and held by a sampling hold circuit 13 for detecting a servo error signal D.sub.o.
