    • The present invention provides safe paint and coating compositions comprising at least one environmentally acceptable phytochemical such as, but not limited to capsicum, grapefruit seed extract and menthol suitable for use in preventing the colonization of a treated surface by a variety of biological species. One aspect of the invention is anti-fouling marine paints (coatings). Another aspect of the invention of the present invention provides paint and coating compositions comprising phytochemicals for use as an architectural paint. The compositions of the invention can further comprise control release agents such as, for example, antioxidants, oxidizers or photosensitive compounds to promote sustained release of the anti-colonization agents at the treated surface and to assist in the abrasion of the paint surface to mechanically dislodge the attaching organisms.

    • The invention is directed to a two-stage cure coating composition comprising a two component composition of a binder and a crosslinking component; the binder comprises an acrylic polymer having a weight average molecular weight of 3,000 to 50,000 and hydroxyl moieties in the range of 7.0 to 40.0 weight percent, based on the weight of the acrylic polymer; wherein at least 40.0 weight percent of the hydroxyl moieties are provided by hydroxy butyl acrylate; and the crosslinking component comprises an organic polyisocyanate; and the first stage curing of a finish of the composition on a substrate forms a water spot free finish within 90 minutes of application and the composition has a pot life of less than a 2 second rise in Zahn cup viscosity in 150 minutes; and the invention also is directed to a method of producing a finish on a substrate utilizing the two component coating composition which comprises forming a two stage cure coating composition by mixing together the above described binder component and a cross-linking component; applying a layer of the coating composition over the substrate; first stage curing the layer on the substrate to a water spot free finish; and second stage curing the first stage cured layer on the substrate into a finish having excellent appearance and excellent physical properties.

    • A crosslinkable composition for coating primed and unprimed substrates comprising from 10 to 80 percent by weight of a hydroxy functional polydiene polymer having a functionality of at least 1.3, 8 to 60 percent by weight of an amino resin crosslinking agent, and 2 to 40 percent by weight of a reinforcing agent. The invention also encompasses a process to make such compositions by partially reacting the three components for 0.5 to 10 hours at 60.degree. to 120.degree. C., optionally in the presence of a small amount of catalyst, to give phase stable compositions and subsequently completely crosslinking the composition by baking the composition on a substrate. The invention also encompasses a process for painting a substrate which comprises priming the substrate with a primer selected from the group consisting of epoxy resin primers and polyester resin primers, applying to the primed substrate a crosslinkable basecoat composition comprising from 10 to 80 percent by weight of a hydroxy functional polydiene polymer having a functionality of at least 1.3, from 8 to 60 percent by weight of an amino resin crosslinking agent, and from 2 to 40 percent by weight of a reinforcing agent, and applying over the basecoat a clearcoat selected from the group consisting of dihydroxy polydiene-based clearcoats, polyester clearcoats, and acrylic clearcoats.
