    • Disclosed is an actuator for a friction engagement device of the type adapted to allow power transmission between two shafts by releasing engagement of the friction engagement device concerned. The actuator comprises a torque/thrust conversion device composed of two elements and adapted to effect and release the engagment of the friction engagement device, a pair of gears respectively connected to the two elements, and a torque generating mechanism gear which is engaged with the pair of gears, the gear ratio between the torque generating mechanism gear and one of the pair of gears being slightly different from that between the torque generating mechanism gear and the other of the pair of gears. In this arrangement, the motor torque is directly converted into the power for effecting and releasing the engagement of the friction engagement device, whereby the control method is simplified and the response to the control signal expedited.

    • A self-energizing brake of the disc/rotor or rim type is disclosed which includes opposed rocker arms attached to a frame by a bolt or the like. The rocker arms support brake pads adjacent the disc/rotor or rim. Cantilever arms on each of said rocker arms extend opposite the brake pads and are connected to a pressure actuated cable. The rocker arms also terminate in a housing which is rotatable about the bolt. The housing encloses unitary helical ridges which mate with helical ridges on a cylinder fixedly secured to the frame by the bolt. The housing is axially movable relative to the bolt. The housing is sealed about the bolt by O-rings and contains a lubricant such as grease. When force is applied to the cable, the pads contact the rotating rim. Such rotation results in movement of the housing in an axial and rotational direction which, due to the interaction of the helical ridges, multiplies the force exerted on the rim by the brake pads. Release of the force on the cable results in a release of the force created by the interaction of the helical ridges and removes the force from the pads, thereby releasing braking action. A spring may be used to assist the release action and provide running clearance between the rim and the pads when the brake is released.

    • A bidirectional brake for use in a drive train to permit a rotary driving element to drive a rotary driven element but not the reverse including a rotary input shaft and a rotary output shaft coaxial with the input shaft. At least one rotatable brake element is carried by the output shaft and is rotatable therewith and at least one non-rotatable brake element is mounted in proximity to the rotatable brake element and engageable therewith. A spring normally urges the rotatable brake element away from the non-rotatable brake element and a limited lost motion connection is established between the shafts. A cam is responsive to relative rotary movement between the shafts for moving the rotatable brake element against the spring towards the non-rotatable brake element and a drag brake is operative associated with the input shaft.

    • A reciprocating drive for operative axial communication with a brake disk stack through a pressure plate to compress the disk stack for braking of a rotatable wheel comprises: a relatively stationary annular housing; an annular ram member mounted coaxially within the housing and adapted for axial movement and contacting engagement with the pressure plate to effect compression of the brake disk stack; a relatively rotatable annular ring gear member mounted coaxially between the housing and the ram member; a plurality of rollers operative between the rotatable ring gear and ram members to effect an axial movement of the ram member when interacting with the rotatable ring gear member; and at least two high torque motors mounted within the housing and having pinion drives for operative engagement with the ring gear member to rotate the member in response to an electrical signal. The rollers may comprise a planetary drive or a recirculating roller drive with suitably configured ring gear and ram member engagement surfaces.

    • Apparatus for electrically controlling the application and release of aircraft brakes. In one embodiment, the invention includes a slurry clutch controlling a reciprocating member which is operatively connected to the pressure plate. In another embodiment of the invention, a torque motor is adapted to have an armature which comprises a ball screw, the ball screw being in engagement with a longitudinal drive rod interconnected with the pressure plate. Rotation of the armature causes the drive rod to move the pressure plate into forceful engagement with the brake disk stack or to retract the same. In yet another embodiment of the invention, a plurality of torque motors are interconnected with a bull gear which is operative for driving the pressure plate. Each of the embodiments of the invention includes apparatus for maintaining a fixed built-in clearance in the brake disk stack of the brake assembly, and are further adapted for utilization with antiskid systems by utilizing a device connected to the pressure plate which allows rapid release of brake torque. Additionally, apparatus is provided which allows a locking of the brake assembly while the aircraft is parked.

    • A disc brake, particularly suitable for use in tractors and like vehicles, is disclosed. Balls are located in complementary inclined recesses in a pressure plate and in an adjacent end wall of the brake housing. The brake is actuated by radial movement of the pressure plate, which produces a camming effect as the balls tend to ride out of the recesses, so that the pressure plate moves axially to urge a rotatable friction disc into engagement with a surface of the housing. Pilot pins engage with lugs on the pressure plate, constraining it against angular movement, so that when on application of the brake the pressure plate engages the friction disc, the pressure plate is prevented from being carried round with the friction disc, ensuring that no servo effect takes place.
