    • The present invention provides a system for training a subject to recognize the onset of hypoxia, the system including (i) a flight simulation system, and (ii) a hypoxia induction system, wherein the flight simulation system is operably linked to the hypoxia induction system. The system provides a tool for pilot training to a pilot, allowing for the delivery of standardized training programs where the tasks required for the operation of an aircraft are able to be coordinated with an induction of hypoxia in the subject. Such a system is also able to provide an assessment tool to demonstrate when a pilot has had sufficient training in recognizing the effects of hypoxia.

    • A motion simulator uses an existing personal computer and off the shelf software to physically simulate and control the motions of a computer generated vehicle. The motion simulator is manually powered by the user and includes a control stick connected to an input to the computer whereby movement of the control stick is translated into movement of the computer generated vehicle. A rigid control arm connects the control stick to a base unit and to a cockpit frame to move the cockpit frame relative to the base unit as the control stick is moved. The control stick also contains buttons which provide additional inputs to the computer generated vehicle. Foot operated pedals are also connected to the computer program and to the cockpit to move the cockpit in conjunction with movement of a computer generated vehicle. A throttle lever unit is also connected to the computer to control the computer generated vehicle. The center of gravity of the cockpit is located below the pitch and roll axis so the cockpit tends to return to an initial position. Gravity assists the cockpit and control stick in resisting movement whereby realism is added to the simulation. A trim adjusting wheel moves the seat unit fore and aft to adjust center of gravity of the cockpit frame to position the cockpit frame in a pitch up or pitch down position. A releasable parking mechanism securing the cockpit frame to the base unit immobilizes the simulator for safe boarding. A speaker bracket on the seat unit provides a place to mount stereo speakers for added realism.

    • A seat cushion for providing realistic acceleration cues to an aircraft simulator pilot. A plurality of contiguous seat cushion compartments with each including an air cell with a non-compressible surface underneath the air cell are provided with apparatus for separately controlling the pressure in the air cells. Apparatus are provided for initially controlling the air pressure in the air cells to allow the two main support areas, the tuberosities, of the simulator pilot to touch the non-compressible surface and thus begin to compress the flesh near these areas. Thereafter during a simulated flight apparatus are provided for controlling the air pressure in the cells to simulate the events that occur in a seat cushion during actual flight.

    • A G-seat for simulating accelerations is provided with apparatus for generating skin tension/contraction cues. These cues are generated by displacing at least a portion of a body-supporting, seat cushion surface in a direction generally parallel to said surface. Disclosed are various exemplary mechanisms for producing this displacement including apparatus for imparting coplanar movement to either a whole seat cushion, or a section thereof, relative to the remainder of the seat; seat cushion lip extenders; and driveable seat upholstery. The operation of the skin tension cue generator is preferably coordinated with the operation of the other active elements of an Advanced G Seat to produce compatible skeletal attitude, flesh pressure gradient, area of contact and skin tension cues.
