    • An emitter-coupled multivibrator circuit comprises two transistors (Q1, Q2), between which is provided a positive feedback by connecting each transistor base to the collector of the other transistor. In the multivibrator, the transistors (Q1, Q2) are connected to operating voltages via coils (L1, L2, L3, L4) instead of using conventional resistors and current sources. This lowers the necessary operating voltage, since no DC voltage loss is provided across the coils. Additionally, this improvement increases amplification during the avalanche process and thus the speed of the whole circuit. Further, the waveform of a signal is closer to the sinusoidal form at high frequencies. The speed of the circuit can be increased further by providing an electromagnetic coupling between the coils (L1, L2, L3, L4).

    • A fluorescent lighting system has: (A) a central power supply connected with regular power line voltage and including a number of power supply modules (e.g., eight), each such module having: (i) a parallel-resonant self-oscillating bridge inverter operative to provide a 35 kHz sinusoidal output voltage at a pair of primary output terminals; (ii) a tank-inductor and a tank-capacitor parallel-connected across the primary output terminals; and (iii) several (e.g., four) pairs of secondary output terminals, each connected with the primary output terminals via its own dedicated current-limiting sub-circuit; thereby to prevent a load connected with a pair of secondary output terminals from drawing more than a certain amount of power; thereby, in turn, to render each pair of secondary output terminals fire-hazard-safe; (B) a plurality of lighting fixtures (e.g., 32), each having a fluorescent lamp and a power input receptacle; each lighting fixture also including a power-factor-corrected 35 Khz ballast connected between its power input receptacle and its fluorescent lamp; and (C) a light-weight power cord plug-in-connected between the power input receptacle of each lighting fixture and one of the pairs of power output terminals. Thus, a single central multi-port power supply will serve to power a large number (e.g., 32) lighting fixtures, with each individual lighting fixture connected directly with one of the many (e.g., 32) individual pairs of secondary power output terminals of the central power supply.

    • A compact folded fluorescent lamp and a small incandescent lamp are both mounted on an ordinary Edison-type screw-base capable of being screwed into an ordinary lamp socket at which ordinary AC power line voltage is controllably provided. An inverter-type ballast is integrally combined with the base and is operable to power the fluorescent lamp whenever the base is indeed screwed into the lamp socket. The incandescent lamp is powered from the AC power line voltage by way of an SCR whose conduction angle is controlled such as to cause the total light provided from the combination fluorescent-incandescent lamp to remain substantially constant from the very first moment that AC power line voltage is provided at the lamp socket. Thus, when the AC power line voltage is initially provided, the light provided from the incandescent lamp will be at its maximum while the light provided from the fluorescent lamp will be at its minimum. Thereafter, the light from the incandescent lamp will gradually diminish as the light from the fluorescent lamp gradually increases. After a brief period, the AC power line voltage will be totally disconnected from the incandescent lamp.

    • In an electronic ballast, a half-bridge inverter drives a series-connected LC circuit near the LC circuit's natural resonance frequency. A relatively high-magnitude substantially sinusoidal 30 kHz output voltage develops across the tank-capacitor of the LC circuit. Each of several instant-start fluorescent lamps is series-connected with a current-limiting capacitor, thereby resulting in several lamp-capacitor series-combinations, each of which is connected across the tank-capacitor. The ballast is powered from ordinary 120 Volt/60 Hz power line voltage by way of a full-wave rectifier. At the DC output terminals of this rectifier exists a DC voltage having an instantaneous absolute magnitude equal to that of the power line voltage. Within the ballast, the inverter is powered from a DC supply voltage of constant magnitude about equal to the peak magnitude of the power line voltage. By interposing power-drawing circuitry in series with each lamp-capacitor combination, an auxiliary DC voltage is developed across a pair of auxiliary DC terminals. When no current flows from the auxiliary DC terminals, the magnitude of the auxiliary DC voltage is equal to that of the DC supply voltage. The maximum DC current available from the auxiliary DC terminals varies with the magnitude of the combined lamp currents and is adjusted so as to be equal to the peak magnitude of the current drawn from the power line; which current, as a result, is nearly sinusoidal.
