    • A device of the same general physical size and shape as a standard audio cassette tape, but which accepts digital information from any of a variety of sources—including for example: Internet transmission, a digital computer, or memory cards (especially digital memory cards)—and plays this digital information through any, for example, standard audio tape cassette player. The device operates by converting the digital representation of the sound into magnetic signals which are presented to the read/write head of the cassette player equipment. The device allows the user of the cassette player to regulate the audio playback using conventional equipment controls such as: START, STOP, REWIND, FAST REWIND, FORWARD, FAST FORWARD, etc. The device has the same general physical dimensions of a standard audio cassette; at least one digital processor; and a slot into which electronic media such as, for example, memory cards, smart cards having a processor and a memory embodied thereon and other memory media may be inserted. Numerous sensors detect changes in at least one of the tape equipment mechanisms in the audio cassette emulator. Various cryptographic techniques are described for protecting the unauthorized distribution of audio information.

    • A party line interface for permitting the connection of a standard telephone to a telephone central office which rings selected subscribers by applying a DC ringing potential of a selected polarity to a selected one of the tip and ring lines of the party line and a ringing tone is disclosed. The interface includes a signal path having two lines with each line having an input terminal and an output terminal. The input terminals are respectively adapted to be connected to the ring and tip lines of the party line. A programmable switching means is coupled to the signal path for selectively applying the ringing signal received by the party line interface to the output terminals for application to the ringing mechanism within the standard telephone as a function of the polarity of the DC component and ground reference applied to the input terminals by the telephone company central office. The ringing signal is applied to the standard telephone by the interface only when a chosen one of the two possible DC polarities provided by the party line central office is applied to a chosen one of the pair of lines of the signal path.

    • A multi-mode audio scrambling system includes an all-pass filter and a 90 degree phase shift circuit for supplying balanced modulators with 90 degree phase displaced audio information and 90 degree phase displaced carriers derived from the horizontal line frequency of a television receiver for producing a single sideband, suppressed carrier audio spectrum. A plurality of offset frequencies are derived from the horizontal line frequency and are used to further modulate the resultant signal to produce a single sideband displaced audio spectrum. A logic circuit selects the offset frequency (mode) in response to vertical interval signals, video inversion signals and audio tone or data signals. The final output is thus scrambled in different modes with different offset frequencies. A complementary unscrambling system is also described.

    • The disclosure relates to a key telephone system intercom line circuit which uses only three leads to connect plural telephones and an intercom line control circuit. These leads comprise two talking circuit leads and one control lead. Exclusion circuits in each of the telephones are controlled by signals applied on the single control lead (1) to allow a telephone to seize the intercom line circuit when it is in an idle state, (2) to allow a called telephone (signalled via a separate pair of calling leads) to answer without being excluded and (3) to exclude all other telephones from the intercom line circuit after the calling telephone has seized the intercom line circuit. Indicators in each telephone associated with particular intercom line circuits provide a visual signal at each telephone set concerning the status of the intercom line circuit by (1) not being lit when the intercom line circuit is in an idle state (2) flashing periodically when the intercom line circuit is in the seized state and (3) being continuously lit when the intercom line is in a talking state.

    • In key telephone systems where a plurality of stations have access to a line by merely depressing a line key, a circuit is provided to prevent that station from entering a busy line. The circuit uses a single relay per station to provide a normal condition of privacy for any line at a station to equipped. The circuit senses the condition of the line and on a busy condition, the station cannot access the busy line. By providing all stations of a key group with privacy circuits, all stations can have complete privacy on line calls. Privacy control is possible on less than all stations of a system and less than all lines by selective deployment of privacy circuits. Optionally, a privacy release button can be provided to allow a station to enable other stations to access that busy line. Protection has been built into the circuit against transient surges and the like.

    • An exclusion circuit for a key telephone set is disclosed, comprised of means for preventing a key telephone set from being connected to either an intercom line circuit or a central office line circuit which is being used by at least one other key telephone. Means are also provided to permit a user of either an intercom or central office line, to temporarily remove the guarded condition, permitting other key telephone sets to connect to the line circuit in use. After the connection of the additional key telephone set or sets, the guarded condition is restored, thereby preventing other unwanted key telephone sets from connecting to the occupied line circuit.
