    • Continuously variable transmission (20) consists of two rolling friction planetaries with a transversely mounted disk (56) interposed between wheels (46, 86, 68, 106) of the planetaries. Varying the position of the disk (56) varies the speed ratio. Transmitted forces urge an idler wheel (88) or (90) into a converging space between the internal ring (44) and the wheel (86) in contact with the disk (56) so as to establish contact forces as a function of transmitted torque. Ratio change is made easy by temporarily moving the disk (56) laterally (134) and utilizing the resultant change in contact position (128, 130) to establish a velocity vector (138, 144) which urges the disk (56) toward a new position using only the power being transmitted. Well-known gear systems are used to extend the ratio range. Well-known tractants, or friction enhancing lubricants are used as lubricants to prevent wear yet maximize capacity.

    • An apparatus and method for operating a continuously variable transmission (CVT), such as a toroidal drive type transmission, is disclosed. The CVT is selectively operated in either a torque control strategy and a ratio control strategy, depending upon the operating conditions of the vehicle. Thus, the CVT is operated in such a manner as to benefit from the advantageous aspects of both the torque and ratio control strategies, while avoiding the disadvantageous aspects of both strategies. The transition from the torque control strategy to the ratio control strategy (and vice versa) can be accomplished by simultaneously calculating the control pressures that would result from operation in both the torque and ratio control strategies, and further assigning a weighted value to each of such calculated control pressures based upon the current operating conditions. The summation of such weighted values provides a composite control signal that facilitates a smooth transition between the two control strategies. The transition from the torque control strategy to the ratio control strategy preferably occurs before a mode shift is effected. Negative feedback is provided in response to ratio changes effected by the control signals to increase stability and to compensate for sensitivity differences at different ratio angles, loading, speeds, and temperatures.

    • A nutating traction drive in which external rolling surfaces on a one-piece bi-conical body (10) are retained against axially spaced internal ring surfaces (51, 52) at diameterically opposite points of contact by a mechanism acting between a body (18) which is rotatable on the axis of the ring surfaces or a first axis (24) and which carries the biconical body (10) on a second axis (30) inclined with respect to and intersecting the first axis at a point (S) of axes intersection located midway between the ring surfaces (51, 52) and points of contact. The mechanism includes a pivotal member (66) having a fulcrum point (78) eccentric from the first axis (24) or displaced from a plane containing both the first (24) and second (30) axes so that a torque reaction to rotation of the carrying body (18) by the biconical body (10) results in a force attempting to increase the angle between the first (24) and second (30) axes. A preloading device (82) acting to rock the pivot member (66) in one direction provides a preload bias of the rolling surfaces against each other whereas an unloading device (84) operating to swing the pivot member in the opposite direction results in a removal of normal friction force between the engaged rolling surfaces.
