    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To instantly create multi-pressure-levels on-demand instantly by restricting the fuel flow at a given steady fuel pump speed.SOLUTION: A fuel injection system operates under substantially constant pump speed and creates multi-pressure levels by diverting the fuel flow using valve 30. Fuel pressure can be switched from one steady pressure level to another level on-demand instantly. This superimposes and overlaps typical fuel injection events in linear operating ranges under different pressure levels, significantly increasing the fuel injection dynamic range. Lower fuel injection when idle or during city driving reduces fuel consumption and reduces exhaust emission that causes smog. The system delivers additional power to the engine instantly at peak load on-demand, reduces idle speed with the engine running smoothly, does not change fuel tank 10 temperature, and may enhance the life of the fuel pump 11.

      SOLUTION: The abnormality diagnosis apparatus for a high pressure fuel system of a cylinder injection type internal combustion engine comprises an accumulator 12, a high pressure fuel pump 18, the spill valve 33, injectors 15, a fuel pressure sensor 19, and a fuel pressure control means 30. A control period for the high pressure fuel pump 18 covers a fuel intake period and a fuel discharge period. The fuel discharge period covers a spill valve closing period and a spill valve opening period. The fuel pressure control means 30 includes a spill valve control period setting means for adjusting the spill valve closing/opening periods, a determination period detecting means for detecting the spill valve opening period during the fuel discharge period in the engine operation as a determination period, a pressure change arithmetic means for calculating change of the fuel pressure on the basis of the determination period, and a diagnosing means for determining that the spill valve 33 is under an abnormal condition on the basis of the change of the fuel pressure.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reconcile improvement of rigidity of a tank body of a fuel tank and a wave dissipation effect of fuel.
      SOLUTION: Rigidity of the tank body 11 is enhanced by projecting parts 12a and 13a projectingly provided on upper wall 12 and lower wall 13 of the tank body 11 by welding joining surfaces 22 at distal ends of the projecting parts 12a and 13a, and the projecting parts 12a and 13a can be made to exert the function of a baffle plate by damming moving of fuel. By forming a passage 23 allowing fuel to pass along the joining surfaces 22 at the distal ends of the projecting parts 12a and 13a, the fuel colliding against the projecting parts 12a and 13a is prevented from being strongly splashed back by the passage 23 to further enhance the effect of the baffle plate, and gas-liquid separation within the tank body 11 is smoothly performed. Since the passage 23 is formed along the joining surfaces 22 at the distal ends of the projecting parts 12a and 13a, the formation of the passage 23 is extremely easy.
