    • A semiconductor laser pumped solid state laser includes a solid laser medium, a semiconductor laser which radiates a pumping laser beam for pumping the solid laser medium, and a light entrance optical system which converges the pumping laser beam in the solid laser medium. The semiconductor laser is disposed with its beam radiating axis inclined to the optical axis of the light entrance optical system so that the pumping laser beam travelling from the semiconductor laser to the solid laser medium and a laser beam reflected at the pumping light inlet side end face of the solid laser medium travel different optical paths. A light-shielding plate which intercepts the laser beam reflected at the pumping light inlet side end face of the solid laser medium is provided between the semiconductor laser and the solid laser medium.

    • An optical memory device comprises a modulator for modulating a laser beam in accordance with recording data, an objective lens for focusing the output laser beam from the modulator on a recording medium, a photosensor arranged at the conjugate position with the focal point of the objective lens, and a judging circuit for detecting erroneous writing in accordance with an output from the photosensor and a source of the recording data. The photosensor is divided into first and second segments by a line which is perpendicular to a direction corresponding to relative movement of the focused light beam on the recording medium. The difference signal between the outputs from the first and second segments is supplied to the judging circuit.

    • An apparatus for detecting optically defects in object such as original glass disc for use in manufacturing video and audio discs by projecting a laser light flux onto the object includes an objective lens for focussing the incident laser light flux onto the object as a small light spot, the laser light flux passing through the objective lens at only its central portion. When the object has no defect in the light spot area, the laser light flux is regularly reflected by the object surface, but when the object includes a defect in the light spot area, the light flux is scattered by the defect. The directly reflected and scattered light fluxes are collected by the objective lens and are then separated from each other by means of a small mirror arranged in an optical axis of the directly reflected light flux. The directly reflected and scattered light fluxes thus separated are received by first and second light detectors. A cylindrical lens is inserted between the small mirror and the first light detector having four divided light receiving regions. The objective lens is driven into an in-focussed position under the control of a focussing error signal which is derived by processing output signals from the four divided light receiving regions. A defect signal is derived by processing output signals supplied from the first and second light detectors.

    • A method and apparatus for detecting a focussing error signal of an objective lens with respect to a video disc on which a light beam emitted from a laser light source is to be focussed as a light spot by the objective lens. A light flux reflected by the video disc is made incident upon a detection prism surface which is set substantially at a critical angle with respect to a central light ray in the reflected light flux, and two light fluxes which situate on respective sides of a boundary plane including the central light ray and perpendicular to a plane of incidence, and are reflected by the reflection surface are separately received by two light receiving regions which are divided along a boundary plane including the central light ray reflected by the reflection surface and perpendicular to the plane of incidence. The focussing error signal is derived as a difference between output signals from the two light receiving regions. A relay lens is arranged between the reflection surface of the detection prism and the light receiving regions and the relay lens forms an image of a pupil of the objective lens on the light receiving regions.
