    • A circuit breaker for a multi-pole electrical distribution circuit includes a cassette associated with each pole in the multi-pole electrical distribution circuit. Each cassette includes a housing, a pair of electrical contacts disposed in the housing, and a thermal and magnetic trip unit supported by the housing. The housing includes a first compartment having the electrical contacts disposed therein and a second compartment having at least a portion of the thermal and magnetic trip unit disposed therein. A wall separates the first and second compartments for isolating the second compartment from gasses generated by separation of the first and second contacts. A duct adjacent to the second compartment allows the gasses to pass to an exterior portion of the housing. The housing includes a pair of opposing slots formed therein for receiving edges of a load terminal. A lever has a first end disposed proximate an end of a bimetallic element and a second end disposed proximate an armature in the magnetic assembly of the trip unit. The lever is rotated by at least one of the bimetallic element and the armature to unlatch an operating mechanism.

    • The circuit breaker (10) of the present invention is a molded case circuit breaker and includes a molded case (12) having a main cover (20), a first terminal (16) and a second terminal (16) mounted inside the case (12) with a stationary contact (44) electrically coupled to the first terminal (18) and a movable contact (42) electrically coupled to the second terminal (16). The movable contact (42) is coupled to an operating mechanism (40) which has a pivoting member (13) moveable between an ON position, an OFF position and a TRIPPED position. An intermediate latching mechanism (52) also is mounted in the housing (12) and is coupled to the operating mechanism (40). The intermediate latching mechanism (52) is selectively operated by a trip unit (60) which comprises a magnetic short circuit release and a thermal overload release. The trip unit (60) can be reconfigured by the addition of an inner yoke (67) nested between the flanges (71) of an outer yoke (66) and a second magnetic shield (70) can be attached to the outer yoke (66) to change the sensitivity of the trip unit (60) to the currents experienced by the circuit breaker. A particular embodiment of the circuit breaker (10) includes an interchangeable bi-metal (62) member of a copper alloy having a chemical composition of CDA null19400 and with an electrical conductivity of not more than 40%

    • A thermal and magnetic trip unit for a multi-pole circuit breaker includes a thermal structure having a bimetallic element and one or more heater elements. Each of the heater elements and a portion of the bimetallic element is generally "U" shaped defining a conductive path which extends from one leg of the U to the other leg. The heater elements and bimetallic element may be configured in parallel to reduce the level of current flowing through the bimetallic element and thus increase the current level at which the bimetallic element will trip the breaker. Alternatively, the heater elements may be configured in series with the bimetallic element, by inserting electrical insulators between the bimetallic element and each of the heater elements and connecting the various "U" shaped elements using a connecting bus which connects the second leg of one element to the first leg of the next element. In this configuration, the thermal structure defines a coil having one turns for each heater element and the bimetallic element. This coil may be used to implement a magnetic trip structure by inserting one or two magnetically permeable yokes, each yoke surrounding one leg of the combined thermal structure. An armature is positioned to be separated from the yoke by a gap such that, when the armature is pulled toward the yoke, it will engage the trip unit. In addition, the trip unit includes a calibration and adjustment bar that allows the gap to be adjusted as well as the force exerted on the armature by a biasing spring. The calibration and adjustment bar also allows each pole of the circuit breaker to be independently calibrated.
