    • A coating-material comprises an unstable emulsion of two colour-vehicles or phases, which are not miscible with one another, one of which is of an aqueous nature and the other of non-aqueous nature, each being differently coloured, and at least the aqueous colour-vehicle or phase containing cellulose-containing fibre materials which may be mechanical or chemical pulp, such as cellulose pulp, wood pulp, straw pulp, sulphite and sulphate cellulose, together with weighting agents such as chalk, gypsum, barium sulphate, kaolin or other suitable clays, spars or earths. The non-aqueous vehicle may be a water immiscible cellulose lacquer, synthetic resin lacquer, or other suitable varnish or drying oils such as linseed oil, stand oil or blown oils, an exemplary composition comprising linseed oil, linseed oil stand oil, turpentine, kaolin, zinc oxide and cellulose pulp. The aqueous colour-vehicle may be, e.g. cellulose sizing dissolved in water, casein or other water-soluble glues or mineral binders such as lime or water glass; to these are added cellulose-containing fibre materials, body colours and substrates. An exemplary composition comprises a solution of methyl cellulose in water, wood or paper pulp, barium sulphate, water and an aqueous suspension of polyvinyl acetate. Body colours such as lithopones, ochres, siennas, chrome yellows, chrome greens or ultramarine blues are added to the two vehicles to give a two-colour coloration of the surface coating, which is made by mixing the vehicles to give an unstable emulsion, and applying the latter as by a brush, roller or spray gun. The coating may subsequently be treated by rubber stumps, dabbing brushes, paper or rubber pads, rollers or the like.
