    • Reticle-holding devices (reticle nullpodsnull) are disclosed for holding circular reticles as used microlithography systems that use circular reticles. An exemplary reticle pod includes a base and cover. Mounted to the base are multiple (desirably three) reticle-support blocks providing three respective, equally spaced, reticle-contact surfaces that support a reticle in the peripheral nullhandling zonenull of the reticle. Mounted to the inside surface of the cover are corresponding compliant pressure-application members (desirably respective flat springs terminating with respective reticle-contact members) that apply a holding force to the reticle. A respective portion of the reticle is situated between each pressure-application member and a respective reticle-support surface. Thus, the reticle, configured as a SEMI standard wafer, is stably held at three points in the handling zone of the reticle without damaging the reticle.

    • Method and apparatus for stacking or stacking as well as facing, bricks. In stacking, the bricks are conveyed to adjacent horizontal fold plates and then one of the plates is moved under the other plate to place the bricks one above the other. The underlying plate with the bricks thereon is moved horizontally away from the upper plate while the bricks on the upper plate are also moved in the same direction so that they are stacked on the bricks on the lower plate. The lower plate is then elevated with the stack of bricks thereon after which the bricks are conveyed off the plate by newly arriving incoming bricks. When it is desired to stack the bricks with their faces contacting each other, after the bricks arrive on the plates (hereinafter termed the first and second plates), the plates are separated in a horizontal plane to expose a third underlying fold plate. The first and second plates are then folded or pivoted upwardly 90.degree. to bottom the bricks on the third plate and to place the faces of the bricks in opposing interrelationship. Then, the second and third plates are pivoted together as a unit 90.degree. to restore the bricks in horizontal planes stacked one above the other with their faces contacting each other. During the latter step the first plate is unfolded back to its horizontal position. Then the third plate is unfolded relative to the second plate back to its original horizontal plane below the first two plates and then the gap between the first and second plates is closed to permit the stacked and faced bricks to be moved off the plates by bricks newly arriving on the first plate.

    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for cutting, grouping and stacking brick wherein after cutting and grouping, selected courses are inverted and stacked on other uninverted courses to form two course high stacks with the respective bricks being stacked face to face in order to assure uniform face color after the bricks have been cured and dried. As a part of the method, rows of single course cut brick are accumulated on a receiving table after exiting from a brick cutting assembly, and selected bricks are transferred from the receiving table to an inverter where they are inverted and deposited back on a course of single high uninverted brick to form a two course stack with the respective bricks being stacked face to face. The formed two course high stack is then transferred to where the same is ultimately loaded onto a kiln car for curing and drying.

    • Apparatus and method are disclosed for forming tied stacks of block-like objects wherein the blocks are first placed on either one of two independent grouping systems. These first and second grouping systems then supply respectively corresponding grouped blocks to a marshalling area, where successive layers of the stacks are formed in different respective orientations. The successively formed layers are then lifted and stacked one on top of the other. The controls for the apparatus are such that at least two different interlocking patterns of blocks may be formed in the marshalling area by controlling the number of blocks taken from each grouping system and also controlling placement of the blocks in the marshalling area, so that a properly tied stack results.

    • Method and apparatus for hacking green bricks for eventual introduction into a kiln; wherein bricks are placed on a spread table in parallel rows, and the spread table is actuated to space each of the rows of bricks from each other at distances greater than spacings that will be required when the bricks are being fired in a kiln. A brick gripping head having a plurality of elongated brick gripping members is positioned over the spread bricks on the spread table with the brick gripping members extending vertically in the spaces between the rows of bricks and horizontally along the opposite sides of the bricks. The spread table is then actuated to reduce the spacings between the bricks to predetermined final spacings required during firing of the bricks in the kiln. Simultaneously with such retraction of the spread table, the brick gripping members are also moved laterally towards each other to accommodate the decreased spacings between the bricks. In the preferred embodiment, the brick gripping members include air bags which are inflatable for gripping the sides of the brick and deflatable for releasing the brick. When the desired final spacing is achieved by retraction of the spread table, the air bags are inflated to grip the brick for delivery onto a brick stack on a kiln car or pallet which will be taken to the kiln. The next group of bricks to be spaced on the spread table are treated in the same manner, however, prior to stacking on the kiln car, they are rotated as a unit ninety degrees in a horizontal plane by rotating the brick gripping head so that when stacked, the rows of bricks extend at right angles to the rows of bricks previously stacked on the kiln car.

    • Brick layers are taken from a kiln car and sequentially stacked on an elevator until a predetermined number of layers have been stacked on the elevator. A fluid actuated pusher then moves the bricks pack horizontally from the elevator onto a shuttle car which then is indexed to a strap feeding station where another fluid actuated pusher moves the stack horizontally from the shuttle car into the inlet of a strapping station where the stack is bundled with steel strapping in conventional fashion. After the stack is initially deposited at the inlet of the strapping station, a strap feed pusher vertically descends behind the stack and advances it further towards the strap station to clear the shuttle car which is then indexed back to its initial position adjacent the elevator for repeating the operation.

    • Bricks are removed in layers from a kiln trolley and are formed in re-arranged layers on collecting tables. The layers are then transferred to a stacking table on which a stack of bricks is formed. If the bricks on the collecting tables are of a different shade to those on the stacking table, they are transferred to storage tables until such time as the bricks on the stacking table are of the same shade, the bricks then being transferred from the storage tables to the stacking table. Transfer of bricks to and from the storage tables is effected by pivotal gripper means.
