    • A method and apparatus for cooking a starch solution and then dispensing that cooked starch solution to a commercial laundry washer provides a vessel with an interior surrounded by a wall for holding a volume of liquid, a water supply inlet for supplying water to the vessel interior, an opening for adding dry starch to the vessel interior, and a steam supply inlet for adding steam to the vessel interior so that the volume of liquid within the vessel can be heated. A level controller controls the level of fluid within the vessel in between the minimum and maximum levels. A recirculation flow line has an inlet and outlet that each communicate with the vessel interior. A gear pump mounted in the recirculation flow line pumps fluid from the inlet to the outlet in a recirculating fashion, the pump having a geared portion that breaks up starch lumps flowing in the recirculation flow line. A discharge flow line transmits the heated starch solution from the vessel interior to the commercial laundry washer and likewise provides a gear pump for breaking up starch lumps that flow through the discharge flow line.

    • A first yarn (21) undergoes a pretreatment process (22) for saturation with a pretreatment solution. In the pretreatment process, the first yarn is supplied to continuously travel through a first bath (100.sub.2) and a second bath (100.sub.3) of the pretreatment solution. The first bath has a volume (V.sub.2) which is less than a volume of the second bath (V.sub.3). Between the first and second baths the pretreatment solution is impressed into the continuously moving first yarn. After the second bath only excess pretreatment solution is removed from the moving yarn, thereby keeping the yarn saturated when it enters a heat treatment (42) for locking the pretreatment solution into the yarn. The first yarn can be subsequently dyed in the same operation or maintain its original appearance (either colored or non-colored). The first yarn can be a warp yarn or weft yarn which, together with either a second yarn (weft or warp yarn, treated or untreated), is woven into a fabric piece (26). Either the fabric piece, or a textile article (28) formed therefrom, is then introduced into a subsequent, specialized dyeing process (30). In the specialized dyeing process, an anionic type dye (such as a direct, fiber-reactive, etc. type dye) is attracted only to the pretreated yarn, so that only the pretreated yarn is colored (dyed or tinted) and the untreated yarn is substantially unchanged.

    • In a process for mercerizing cellulosic cloth by treating the cloth with 3-10% caustic solution at the boil in a boilout stage, washing the cloth after treatment in the boilout stage and treating the washed cloth with 20-25% caustic in a mercerizer, an improvement comprises the steps of:(a) collecting overflow from the boilout stage, contaminated with additives used in weaving or knitting the cloth;(b) treating the contaminated overflow from the boilout stage by hyperfiltration to produce a recovered fraction of relatively pure caustic solution and a concentrate fraction containing additives used in weaving or knitting the cloth;(c) washing the cloth after treatment in the boilout stage with the recovered fraction of relatively pure caustic from step (b).

    • Size formulations are supplied to slasher size boxes in an efficient manner allowing nearly unlimited variation in size formulations, minimizing the floor space of size formulation equipment, minimizing energy waste, and providing reclamation of used size. A number of size formulation components are mixed and heated to produce a size formulation having a predetermined composition and temperature. The size formulation is circulated in a closed loop past each of the size boxes. The amount of size in each size box is sensed by a level control, and the size formulation is withdrawn from the closed loop and supplied to a size box in response to the level sensing. A plurality of formula stations are provided, at least one adjacent and in operative communication with each size box, and additional size formulation components are added to the size formulation at each size formula station, and mixed with the size formulation prior to introduction into the size box. Heating of the size formulation is accomplished utilizing an interfacial surface generation (ISG) heat exchanger, and mixing at the formula stations is accomplished utilizing an ISG mixer. A single mixing tank, in communication with a holding tank disposed in the closed size formulation recirculating loop, can supply all the size boxes.
