A frame that is received from the first channel in i of the q buffers is stored and the status is changed to unavailable. The frame is selectively assigned to the second channel based on a number of the buffers j assigned to the second channel and a number of the buffers h neither reserved nor assigned to any channel, wherein i+j≦m and h+q≦n. The i buffers storing the frame are assigned to the second channel if the frame is assigned to the second channel. The status of the i buffers is changed to available if the frame is subsequently sent over the second channel.

    • A network device for transferring data from a first network to a second network comprises a switch comprising a first port adapted to receive a frame of the data from the first network and a second port adapted to transmit the frame to the second network. The frame comprises a plurality of words including a first word comprising a first portion of an internet protocol address and a second word comprising a second portion of the internet protocol address. The switch adds one or more bits to the frame so that the first and second portions of the internet protocol address appear within a single word of the frame. A processor receives the frame from the switch, and to modify the internet protocol address in the frame. The switch receives the frame from the processor, and removes the one or more bits from the frame before the second port transmits the frame to the second network.

According to some embodiments, the full-duplex end of the link can detect that the other end of the link is in half-duplex mode by one or more techniques including detecting cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors and frame fragments, and can correct the duplex mismatch by changing to half-duplex mode.

    • A packet is received via a port of the network device, and a database lookup is performed using header information of the packet. A priority associated with the packet is determined, and it is determined whether the priority is associated with a particular communication protocol that provides guaranteed delivery, defined latency, and/or defined throughput. When it is determined that the priority is associated with the particular communication protocol, i) it is determined, based on the database lookup, whether a destination address (DA) of the packet is associated with the particular communication protocol, and ii) when it is determined that the DA of the packet is associated with the particular communication protocol, the packet is prevented from egressing from ports of the network device that are operating according to the particular communication protocol with a frame priority indicator corresponding to a value reserved for the particular communication protocol.
