    • An arrangement for detecting local light irradiation in an illegal attack attempt to intentionally induce a malfunction or faulty condition is formed on a small chip occupancy area so as to provide high detection sensitivity. In a region containing a logic circuit, a plurality of series-coupled detection inverters are distributively disposed as photodetector elements having a constant logical value of primary-stage input. When at least one of the series-coupled detection inverters is irradiated with light, an output thereof is inverted, thereby producing a final output through the series-coupled detection inverters. Based on the final output thus produced, local light irradiation can be detected.

    • An optoelectronic pulse generator is provided that includes a thyristor detector/emitter device having an input port and an output port. The thyristor detector/emitter device is adapted to detect an input optical pulse supplied to the input port and to produce an output optical pulse (via laser emission) and an output electrical pulse in response to the detected input optical pulse. The output optical pulse is output via the output port. An optical feedback path is operably coupled between the output port and the input port of the thyristor detector/emitter device. The optical feedback path supplies a portion of the output optical pulse produced by the thyristor detector/emitter device to the input port, thereby causing the thyristor detector/emitter device to produce a sequence of output optical pulses and a corresponding sequence of output electrical pulses. Preferably, the optical feedback path comprises a programmable optical delay line realized by a network of in-plane waveguide structures and directional coupler devices that are integrally formed with the thyristor device structure of the detector/emitter device.

    • An optical digital holding apparatus of the present invention carries out functions of a flip-flop apparatus (RS flip-flop, D flip-flop etc.) which are one kind of electrical digital holding apparatus, and can be achieved by placing optical connecting wiring having a direct or indirect feedback circuit between multistage optical selectors having selector functions. The optical digital holding apparatus of the present invention includes multistage selectors which receive an aggregation of spatially distributed optical digital information signals propagating in a predetermined direction and bearing binary digital information and an optical control signal bearing binary digital information. These selectors selectively output a portion of an aggregation of the digital information signals received in accordance with a value of the digital information carried by the optical control signal. The optical digital holding apparatus also includes optical connection wiring for connecting an output optical signal of one of the selectors to an input optical signal of one of the other selectors.

    • An optoelectronic integrated circuit including an optical bistable circuit comprises: an optical gate device responsive to a current injected to an active layer thereof and to a first ray transmitted through the active layer for emitting first and second light rays and for controlling intensity of the first light ray in accordance with the current; and a first phototransistor serially connected with the optical gate device so arranged to receive the second light ray for causing the current to flow through the optical gate device in response to the second light ray and a set signal light ray, the first phototransistor holding flowing of the current when the second light ray is emitted. This circuit can control the first light ray incident to the optical gate device in response to a set signal light ray applied to the first phototransistor. A second phototransistor may be included for stopping emission of light by the optical gate device in response to a reset signal light ray. Such a circuit can be used in an optical neural network as a light-switching device. The first light ray is applied to an optical gate device perpendicularly or horizontally with respect to the plane of the substrate thereof. The second light ray may be emitted by a light-emitting device serially connected with the optical gate.
